Job summary

Heidelberg Materials undertakes a new underground limestone mining venture in Cadomin, Alberta and seeks an experienced Underground Quarry Superintendent to lead start-up and ongoing operations. The role requires strong leadership, safety focus, and integration with maintenance and QA teams.

You will guide production, ground control, and regulatory compliance, while mentoring supervisors, contractors, and union staff to achieve cost, quality, and safety targets.

Qualifications

• Qualified Underground Mine Foreman or Mine Manager in Alberta or ability to obtain certification.
• 8–10 years of underground mining experience preferred.
• 3–5 years of progressive leadership experience in a supervisory or management role.
• Experience with SAP, Kronos or similar maintenance/workforce systems an asset.

Responsibilities

• Lead and direct all underground mining and quarry operations to ensure safe, efficient, and productive performance.
• Promote a culture where safety is the highest priority through visible leadership and coaching.
• Ensure compliance with mining regulations, environmental requirements, and company policies.
• Manage underground production activities including drilling, blasting, loading, hauling, and ground support.
• Oversee rail loadout operations and coordinate inbound/outbound transportation requirements.
• Monitor daily production and KPIs related to mining, material movement, and equipment utilization.
• Supervise and develop supervisors, hourly employees, and contractors.
• Coordinate workforce planning, scheduling, training, and development activities.
• Lead incident investigations, corrective actions, and risk management initiatives.

We operate over 450 locations across North America with approximately 9,000 employees.**Position Summary**As Cadomin continues its transition to a fully underground mining operation, this role will be critical in building a high-performance safety culture, developing front-line leadership, and ensuring the operation consistently achieves production, quality, cost, and regulatory objectives.The Superintendent will oversee day-to-day operations while driving continuous improvement in safety, equipment reliability, operational efficiency, and workforce capability.**Key Responsibilities**· Lead and direct all underground mining and quarry operations to ensure safe, efficient, and productive performance.· Promote a culture where safety is the highest priority through visible leadership, field engagement, inspections, audits, and coaching.· Ensure compliance with all applicable mining regulations, environmental requirements, company policies, collective agreements, and Occupational Health & Safety legislation.· Manage and coordinate underground production activities, including drilling, blasting, loading, hauling, ground support, crushing, and limestone blending.· Oversee rail loadout operations and coordinate inbound and outbound transportation requirements.· Monitor daily production activities and maintain key performance indicators related to mining, material movement, equipment utilization, crushing, and train loadout.· Supervise and develop supervisors, hourly employees, and contractors, fostering a culture of accountability and continuous improvement.· Coordinate workforce planning, scheduling, training, and development activities.· Lead incident investigations, corrective action implementation, and risk management initiatives.· Partner with maintenance teams to maximize equipment availability and reliability of both mobile and stationary assets.· Support budgeting, operating cost control, and resource planning activities.· Collaborate with technical, quality, maintenance, and operational teams to ensure limestone quality specifications are consistently achieved.· Assist with short and long-range mine planning and execution strategies.· Act as site leader in the absence of the Quarry Manager.**What We're Looking For**· Proven leadership experience in underground mining, underground quarrying, or heavy industrial operations.· Experience leading teams within a unionized environment.· Strong knowledge of underground mining methods, equipment, ventilation, ground control, and safe work practices.· Demonstrated success managing production, maintenance coordination, and operational performance.· Strong understanding of safety, environmental, and mining regulatory requirements.· Exceptional problem-solving, decision-making, and organizational skills.· Strong communication and people leadership abilities.· Ability to build effective working relationships with employees, contractors, union representatives, and site leadership.**Qualifications**· Qualified Underground Mine Foreman or Mine Manager in Alberta or ability to obtain certification.· 8-10 years of underground mining experience preferred· 3-5 years of progressive leadership experience in a supervisory or management role.· Mining Technician, Trades Certification, or other relevant technical training considered an asset.· Underground mine rescue and emergency response training considered an asset.· Experience with mobile and stationary mining equipment maintenance coordination.· Experience with SAP, Kronos, or similar maintenance and workforce management systems considered an asset.· Experience with surveying, mine planning support, GPS drilling systems, or production tracking systems considered an asset.· Valid Class 5 Driver's License with an acceptable driving record.**What You'll Bring**· A strong commitment to safety leadership and workforce engagement.· Operational expertise in underground mining environments.· A focus on equipment reliability, operational excellence, and cost management.· The ability to lead change and support the continued evolution of Cadomin's underground mining operation.· A coaching mindset with a passion for developing people and building high-performing teams.**Work Environment**· Primarily quarry-based with exposure to varying weather conditions, noise, and physical demands. The successful candidate will be expected to maintain a regular on-site presence.
