Job summary

Blackline Civil Inc. is seeking an experienced Underground Foreman to lead field crews in the installation of underground utilities across Alberta projects.

This hands‑on leadership role directs daily site activities, coordinates crews and equipment, and ensures safe, high‑quality execution of water, sanitary, and storm systems. The ideal candidate brings 5–10+ years in underground civil construction, can read engineered drawings, and demonstrates strong leadership and problem‑solving skills.

Qualifications

• 5–10+ years of experience in underground civil construction
• Proven experience as a Foreman or Lead Hand on underground crews
• Able to read and interpret engineered drawings and grades
• Experience with water, storm, and sanitary installation and trenching
• Experience with laser or GPS grade systems
• Valid driver’s license (Class 5; Class 3 considered an asset)

Responsibilities

• Lead and supervise underground utility crews in day-to-day operations
• Coordinate labor, equipment, and materials to meet production targets
• Install water, sanitary, and storm systems to line and grade
• Read and interpret drawings, grades, and specifications
• Work with Superintendents and Project Managers on scheduling and execution
• Ensure safe excavation practices and proper trenching/shoring
• Oversee bedding, pipe installation, backfill, and compaction
• Monitor productivity and adjust crew activities for efficiency
• Complete daily reports and document site progress
• Identify and resolve site issues and promote safety on all jobsites
• Coordinate with inspectors, consultants, and other trades as required

About the Role

We are seeking an experienced Underground Foreman to lead field crews in the installation of underground utilities, including water, sanitary, and storm systems.The ideal candidate is a strong leader who understands underground construction inside and out and can drive productivity while maintaining high-quality standards. This is a hands-on leadership role responsible for directing daily site activities, coordinating crews and equipment, and ensuring work is completed safely, efficiently, and to specification.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead and supervise underground utility crews in day-to-day operations
• Coordinate labor, equipment, and materials to meet production targets
• Install water, sanitary, and storm systems to line and grade
• Read and interpret drawings, grades, and specifications
• Work closely with Superintendents and Project Managers on scheduling and execution
• Ensure proper trenching, shoring, and safe excavation practices
• Oversee bedding, pipe installation, backfill, and compaction activities
• Monitor productivity and adjust crew activities to maintain efficiency
• Complete daily reports, track quantities, and document site progress
• Identify and resolve site issues proactively
• Enforce and promote a strong safety culture on all job sites
• Coordinate with inspectors, consultants, and other trades as required

Qualifications & Experience

• 5–10+ years of experience in underground civil construction
• Proven experience as a Foreman or Lead Hand on underground crews
• Strong knowledge of:
• Water, storm, and sanitary installation
• Deep utilities and trenching practices
• Bedding, backfill, and compaction requirements
• Ability to read and interpret engineered drawings and grades
• Experience working with laser and/or GPS grade systems
• Strong leadership, communication, and organizational skills
• Experience with municipal and commercial development projects
• Valid driver’s license (Class 5 required; Class 3 considered an asset)
