We are committed to fostering excellence, innovation, belonging and community in all that we do.

The SFU Indigenous Languages Program (INLP) is a continuation of the award-winning SFU Kamloops Program from which Indigenous Studies programs, Indigenous languages and language courses were originally developed and offered. The mission of INLP and its Community Academic Outreach programs has been the collective and individual empowerment of Indigenous peoples through education, taking into account First Nations' own knowledge systems, histories, ways of being and learning. The INLP Team works in a collaborative environment and works with speech communities and Indigenous organizations on language revitalization initiatives supporting Indigenous language learning off-campus in First Nations communities in BC and the Yukon.

The role provides advice to prospective and admitted Indigenous undergraduate cohort students regarding academic requirements in accordance with University, faculty, unit, and program policies, procedures, and regulations. The role reviews academic records and processes admission to unit programs and approves graduation applications. The role coordinates the participation of staff, faculty and students in various events and activities and contributes to the development of innovative recruitment and retention programming for students. The role develops and conducts presentations on campus and externally, at special events, to recruit students. The role provides information, conducts research, and develops materials to contribute to discussions and decision-making related to the undergraduate programs, and to enhance and support student recruitment initiatives, enrolment, and retention efforts. The role participates in and supports the Undergraduate Curriculum Committee and related processes.

The ideal candidate will be able to thrive in a busy and dynamic work environment with multiple objectives and concurrent deadlines. Attention to detail would be a strong asset to this position as well as ability to handle confidential and/or sensitive materials and information with discretion. The ideal candidate has excellent knowledge of Canadian Indigenous post-secondary issues and ability to exercise mature judgment, initiative, diplomacy and tact. The ideal candidate has good knowledge of University and Academic policies, regulations, and procedures and the ability to guide students.

Qualifications

Bachelor's Degree in Arts or a related discipline, and three years of related experience in post-secondary program advising and registration services and/or in student recruitment and engagement, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

  • Familiarity with post-secondary Indigenous language revitalization and related programs.
  • Good knowledge and experience with BC/Yukon Indigenous communities’ post-secondary education, training and business practices.
  • Excellent cross-cultural competency and interpersonal communication (oral and written) skills.
