Job description

As a UI Artist at Ubisoft Toronto, you'll build visuals that smoothly guide players as they navigate a game, breaking down barriers that stand between them.

Though your title may include 'artist,' you're primarily a game developer. With a player-focused mindset, you utilize space and select optimal design elements such as colour, typography, and animation to communicate clear, consistent key content at the right time and place. Your work ensures gameplay remains immersive and uninterrupted by questions like 'What am I supposed to be doing again?'

What you'll do

  • Partner with brand and art directors to understand the game's visual identity, art direction, and brand guidelines.
  • Follow design documentation to translate high-level gameplay ideas into functional UI designs.
  • Work closely with UX designers to visually communicate the laid-out user experience.
  • Create interface assets (menus, animations, HUD icons, buttons, world maps), build wireframes, and mockups.
  • Balance artistic aspects with technical constraints.
  • Develop and refine your work based on feedback, including debugging and optimization.
  • Document and share your UI design workflow and best practices.
  • Collaborate with the localization team to adapt menus into different languages.

Qualifications: What you bring

  • A college diploma in Digital Media, Computation Arts, Graphic Design, or equivalent.
  • 5+ years of experience in visual design within the video game industry.
  • Knowledge of design tools (Photoshop, Illustrator, After Effects), game engines (Unity or Unreal), game limitations, and prototyping tools.
  • Understanding of usability principles and information architecture.
  • A highly creative, collaborative, and innovative spirit.
  • Excellent problem-solving, communication, interpersonal, and presentation skills.
  • Motivation to seek feedback and adapt accordingly.
  • A keen eye for UX design and a passion for visual communication.
  • Knowledge of 3D software (e.g., 3DS Max or Maya), familiarity with scripting languages, and shader writing (nice to have).

What to send our way

  • Your CV highlighting your education, experience, and skills.
  • A portfolio of your best work showcasing your UI skills (attach images or provide a link to your website or online portfolio).

Additional Information

Please send us a portfolio of your best work (attach images or provide a password-protected link), along with your CV highlighting your education, experience, and skills.
