Job summary

Ontario Public Service (OPS) seeks a Pilot 4 for AFFES to protect forests and communities across northern Ontario. The role involves PIC duties on float aircraft, water bombing, and coordination of flight planning. Expect schedules of 10 days on / 4 days off, with travel away from base as needed and overtime in difficult conditions.

You must hold a Canadian Airline Transport Pilot Licence with float experience, Group 1 Instrument Rating, and valid medical and security clearances.

Qualifications

• You hold a Canadian Airline Transport Pilot Licence for single and multi-engine land and sea aircraft.
• You carry a Group 1 Instrument Rating and a Category 1 Medical.
• You possess a Restricted Radio Telephone Operator's Certificate.
• You can pass Canadian and U.S. security screening and travel outside province.
• You have 3,000+ hours total time with 500+ hours PIC float experience.

Responsibilities

• Pilot-in-Command on single and multi-engine float aircraft under VFR/IFR.
• Engage in water bombing operations to support fire suppression.
• Function as PIC and/or SIC for off-airport Reduced Ground Roll ops in the far north.
• Assist clients in planning flight requirements and ensure safe operation.
• Travel away from base as required and work overtime in challenging conditions.
• Support coordination with Nav-Canada, fire and air service staff.

About the job

While working scheduled rotations from both a home base location and remote operating facilities in northern Ontario, you will:

• perform Pilot-in-Command flight and related duties on single & multi-engine fixed wing aircraft operating under visual and instrument flight rules
• engage in Single-Pilot water bombing operations in support of fire suppression
• function as Pilot-in-Command and/or Second-in-Command supporting off-airport Reduced Ground Roll operations in the far north
• assist clients in planning their flight requirements
• ensure the safe and efficient operation of the aircraft during all phases of flight
• be required to travel away from base, sometimes for extended periods
• be required to work overtime and to work in adverse conditions

What you bring to the team

Mandatory requirements

• You have a valid Canadian Airline Transport Pilot Licence endorsed for single and multi-engine land and sea fixed-wing aircraft.
• You have a Group 1 Instrument Rating.
• You have a Category 1 Medical, valid for single pilot operations.
• You have a valid Restricted Radio Telephone Operator's Certificate.
• You have the ability to pass Canadian and U.S. Transport Agency Security Screening.
• You possess a valid Passport or the ability to acquire one.
• You have minimum flight experience of 3,000 hours total flying time with 500 hours float experience as Pilot-in-Command.
• You have the ability to travel out of province.

Technical knowledge

• You have extensive knowledge of float, waterbombing and instrument flight rules (IFR) transport flight operations.
• You have the ability to apply and interpret the Aeronautics Act, Canadian Aviation Regulations (CAR's) and the Commercial Air Service Standards.
• You have knowledge of the Transportation of Dangerous Goods Regulations.
• You have the ability to understand ministry air operations to safely operate aircraft according to regulations.
• You have the ability to interpret and apply worker responsibilities as outlined in the Occupational Health and Safety Act.

General skills

• You have strong communication and interpersonal skills to deal with Nav-Canada, flight services, fire and air service staff, and a wide variety of client groups.
• You have proven group leadership skills.
• You have good judgment in order to apply sound pilot decision-making.

What we offer

Pilot Float Agreement Memorandum of Understanding (MOU)

Normal work schedule is based on 10 days on / 4 days off. However, actual pilot duty assignments can vary dramatically over the course of a calendar year. Additionally, the Pilot Float Agreement provides 5 paid days off on top of standard vacation allotments.
