Job summary

NordSpace is seeking a Turbomachinery Engineer to design, analyze, and develop turbopumps and rotating machinery for liquid rocket engines. You will work on components that spin at tens of thousands of RPM while pumping cryogenic propellants at extreme pressures, spanning concept design to hardware build and test support.

This hands-on role requires strong fundamentals in rotordynamics, CFD/FEA, and propulsion systems, with cross-functional collaboration across engineering teams in Markham,

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Aerospace, Mechanical, Nuclear or closely related engineering; Master's degree is an asset.
  • 3+ years hands-on turbomachinery, rotating equipment, or fluid machinery design (e.g., gas turbines, high-pressure systems).
  • Experience owning design, analysis, and delivery from concept to hardware.
  • Working knowledge of rotordynamics, bearing/seal design, and rotating structural analysis.
  • Strong background in fluid dynamics, heat transfer, combustion, and structural mechanics as applied to high pressure, high temperature hardware.
  • Proficiency with 3D CAD tools for complex assemblies and GD&T compliant drawings.
  • Experience with FEA/CFD tools for structural, thermal, and fluid performance.
  • Familiarity with high-speed rotating machinery failure modes and design margins.
  • Experience defining and supporting manufacturing processes for precision hardware in development or production environments.

Responsibilities

  • Design and analyze turbopumps (inducers, impellers, turbines, manifolds) for liquid propellant rocket engines.
  • Perform rotordynamic analysis, including critical speed, bearing/seal dynamics, and whirl stability.
  • Conduct structural analysis (FEA) of rotating and static components under thermal, pressure, and centrifugal loads.
  • Perform/review CFD analysis of pump and turbine flow paths to optimize efficiency and predict cavitation and off-design performance.
  • Develop component- and system-level performance models (pump/turbine maps, cycle balance).
  • Select and size bearings, seals, and dampers for high-speed cryogenic or hot-gas environments.
  • Support hardware fabrication, assembly, and instrumentation planning.
  • Support hot-fire and component testing; analyze data and correlate with predictions.
  • Investigate anomalies and drive root-cause corrective actions.
  • Collaborate with combustion devices, structures, mechanical, and systems engineering teams.
  • Contribute to design reviews, technical documentation, and requirements verification.
  • Work with suppliers on custom hardware procurement when needed.

Job description

Engineering - Launch Systems Full Time Markham, ON $75,000 - $95,000 CAD per year

NordSpace(https://nordspace.com) is a Canadian startup with the mission to advance life on Earth, from space.NordSpaceis committed to extremely rapid innovation and development of the most ambitious aerospace projects with the most ambitious team. With divisions spanning everything fromspace robotics to satellites torockets,NordSpaceis driven to bring space closer to Earth and inspire generations of space explorers.

Role purpose:

As a Turbomachinery Engineer you will design, analyze, and develop turbopumps and related rotating machinery for liquid rocket engines. You'll work on components that spin at tens of thousands of RPM while pumping cryogenic propellants at extreme pressures, this is one of the most demanding mechanical design challenges in aerospace. This role spans the full lifecycle: concept design, detailed analysis, hardware build, test support, and failure investigation.

The role is idealfor someone who thrives in a fast-paced, hands-on environment and wants to see their designs tested, iterated, and flown.

Core responsibilities
  • Design and analyze turbopumps (inducers, impellers, turbines, manifolds) for liquid propellant rocket engines.
  • Perform rotordynamic analysis, including critical speed prediction, bearing/seal dynamics, and whirl stability.
  • Conduct structural analysis (FEA) of rotating and static components under thermal, pressure, and centrifugal loads.
  • Perform/Review CFD analysis of pump and turbine flow paths to optimize efficiency and predict cavitation, stall, and off-design performance.
  • Develop component-level and system-level performance models (pump/turbine maps, cycle balance).
  • Select and size bearings, seals, and dampers for high-speed cryogenic or hot-gas environments.
  • Support hardware fabrication, assembly, and instrumentation planning.
  • Support hot-fire and component testing; analyze test data and correlate against predictions.
  • Investigate anomalies and failures and drive root-cause corrective actions.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with combustion devices, structures, mechanical, and systems engineering teams.
  • Contribute to design reviews, technical documentation, and requirements verification.
  • Work closely with suppliers and vendors on custom hardware procurement when needed.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Aerospace, Mechanical, Nuclear or a closely related engineering discipline;Master’sdegree is an asset.
  • 3+ years ofhands onexperience in turbomachinery, rotating equipment, or fluid machinery design (e.g., gas turbines, high pressure chemical process equipment, combustion systems).
  • Demonstrated experience owning design, analysis, and delivery from concept to hardware.
  • Working knowledge of rotordynamics, bearing/seal design, and rotating structural analysis.
  • Strong background in fluid dynamics, heat transfer, combustion, and structural mechanics as applied to high pressure, high temperaturehardware.
  • Proficiencywith 3D CAD tools for complex assemblies and detailedcomponentdesign, and fluency with GD&T compliant engineering drawings.
  • Experience with simulation and analysis tools (e.g., FEA, CFD, analytical modeling) for structural, thermal, and fluid performance.
  • Familiarity with high-speed rotating machinery failure modes and design margins.
  • Experience defining and supporting manufacturing processes for precision hardware (e.g., machining, welding/brazing, additive manufacturing, surface treatments) in a development or production environment, including design for manufacturability and testability.
  • Proactive mindset:identifiesblockers (technical, schedule, resource, or process) early and drives them to resolution to keep the program moving.
