LJB Engineering, a multi-disciplinary firm, seeks a Tunnel Engineering Intern for our Underground Services team in Frederick, Maryland. You will learn from experienced engineers while contributing to real projects, producing calculations, and supporting design efforts in tunnel and trenchless work.

Ideal candidates are in their junior or senior year of civil, structural, or geotechnical studies, with 0-3 years of related experience, strong communication, and writing skills.

Responsibilities

  • Produce technical deliverables according to client specifications with guidance.
  • Prepare construction plans, calculations, and design reports with guidance.
  • Communicate technical information in a professional manner in meetings with owners, contractors, and stakeholders.
  • Produce engineering calculations including tunnel, geotechnical, and structural analysis as required.
  • Assist in preparing memoranda, letters, and reports, including geotechnical data and baseline reports.
  • Assist with geotechnical engineering for tunnel and trenchless design, developing design parameters from reports.
  • Assist with structural engineering for tunnel, shafts, and stations including lining and retaining structures.
  • Observe construction in the field as needed.
  • Field work may include weekdays, nights, and weekends; office work during standard hours.

We are currently seeking a Tunnel Engineering Intern for our Underground Services team in Frederick, Maryland. We offer challenging and rewarding assignments for co-op students and summer interns to learn and grow in their capabilities. Students work with experienced engineers and gain exposure to a variety of civil engineering challenges. They also have the opportunity to work on real world projects in a professional environment.

Compensation: $20+ an hour

Tunnel Engineering Intern Essential Functions
  • Produce technical deliverables according to client specifications with appropriate guidance.
  • Prepare construction plans and specifications, structural/geotechnical calculations and design reports, and technical memoranda with appropriate guidance.
  • Communicate technical and non-technical information in a concise, professional manner, including participation in technical meetings and workshops with owners, contractors, and other stakeholders.
  • Produce engineering calculations including tunnel, geotechnical, and structural calculations (including numerical analysis) as required in support of tunnel and trenchless design including support of excavation (shafts & tunnels – including connection details and complex structures), and adherence to all local and national codes of practice for concrete, steel, and timber design.
  • Assist in preparation of technical memoranda, letters, and reports, including geotechnical data reports (GDR’s), and geotechnical baseline reports (GBR’s).
  • Assist with geotechnical engineering associated with tunnel and trenchless design, including development of design parameters from geotechnical reports and project documents.
  • Assist with structural engineering associated with tunnel, shaft, and stations, including lining, connections, support of excavation, and retaining structures in steel, concrete, and timber.
  • Observe construction in the field on an as needed basis.
  • Field based assignments will include weekdays, night, and weekend work. Office based assignments will require a standard weekday business hours work schedule
Education
TUNNEL ENGINEERING INTERN ESSENTIAL CREDENTIALS:
  • Junior or Senior year of bachelor’s degree in relevant areas of study required (Civil, Structural, Geological/Geotechnical, or related field).

  • Excellent problem solving, decision making, and teamwork skills.
  • Excellent technical writing skills and attention to detail.
  • Excellent communication skills, a thorough knowledge of relevant technical codes, operations, processes, and trends.

  • Ability to work independently, exercise independent judgment, interact with other staff, and collaborate with other disciplines.
