Responsibilities
- Lead and support the design and construction of tunnelling and trenchless technology installations for water and wastewater conveyance systems.
- Provide technical expertise in tunnelling and trenchless technology methods.
- Prepare and review technical specifications, drawings, and contract documents, including geotechnical investigations and geotechnical reports.
- Conduct feasibility studies, constructability reviews, and risk assessments.
- Manage and support project delivery from conceptual design through detailed design and construction support.
- Lead and collaborate with multidisciplinary teams including civil, geotechnical, and environmental engineers.
- Engage with clients, contractors, and regulatory agencies to ensure successful project outcomes and compliance with applicable industry standards.
- Demonstrate strong command of the English language with excellent written, presentation, and verbal communication skills, including business development and client liaison.
You Bring To The Role
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Civil Engineering, Geological Engineering, or a related discipline from an accredited university.
- Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) designation in Ontario.
- 10 to 15 years of design experience in heavy civil, underground infrastructure projects in water and wastewater.
- Minimum 8 years of experience with tunnelling and trenchless technology methods projects.
- Strong knowledge of tunnelling and trenchless technology methods including :
- Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) tunnelling
- Microtunnelling
- Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD)
- Small Boring Unit (SBU) tunnelling
- Jack and Bore methods
- Knowledge of Geotechnical Data Reports including developing and preparing Geotechnical Interpretive Reports, Geotechnical Baseline Reports, and other geotechnical-related Contract documents for various procurement methods.
- Familiarity with relevant codes, standards, and permitting processes.
- Oversee the implementation design software such as AutoCAD, Civil 3D, MicroStation, and GIS.
- Excellent communication, leadership, and problem-solving skills.
- Experience with large-diameter water or wastewater conveyance systems.
- Knowledge of construction management and contract administration.
Technical Expertise Requirements
- Proven experience in microtunnelling including shaft construction, slurry systems, and guidance / control systems including ability to interpret and apply specifications for pipe jacking forces, lubrication systems, and jacking frame design.
- In-depth knowledge of HDD planning, bore path design, hydrofracture risk analysis, and drilling fluid management including experience with pilot hole steering, reaming, and pullback operations for large-diameter pipelines.
- Familiarity with SBU operations for short-distance, small-diameter installations including knowledge of cutterhead selection, spoil removal, and line-and-grade control for SBU applications.
- Expertise in jack and bore techniques for steel casing installations under critical infrastructure including familiarity with auger boring equipment, casing pipe design, and jacking pit construction.
General Proficiency
- Understanding of ground conditions and mitigation strategies for settlement and obstructions for tunnelling and trenchless technology methods.
- Competence in managing ground stability, dewatering, and settlement control.
- Ability to assess constructability and cost-effectiveness of tunnelling and trenchless methods.
- Strong grasp of feasibility assessments, risk management, and method selection based on geotechnical and hydraulic constraints.
- Experience with trenchless rehabilitation techniques such as CIPP, slip lining, and pipe bursting is an asset.
- Possession of industry-recognized credentials in trenchless technology or tunnelling (such as NASTT or ITA) are highly desirable.
