Job Description

POSITION PURPOSE SUMMARY

The Thrift Store Clerk is a valued member of our team, responsible for providing service to customers, sort incoming product, and assists in the ongoing retail operations of The Salvation Army Lindsay Thrift Store.

Accountabilities

  • Greet and interact with customers/donors in a positive, friendly and courteous manner.
  • Contribute to meeting store sales targets; provide efficient courteous customer service; use tact when dealing with difficult customers.
  • Sort & Price donations as directed; protect the integrity of all donated items.
  • Responsible for accurate completion of all customer transactions including cash and debit/credit sales with minimal voids, overages or shortages.
  • Adhere to store policy regarding cheques, credit cards, refunds, voids and holds.
  • Pay attention to store security, by monitoring activity within the store.
  • Assist with store layout plans to attract customers, which include window displays and merchandise displays; ensures attractiveness of the store through “Tidy Maintenance”.
  • Assist with donation turnover, replenish inventory levels on the sales floor and remove inventory from sales floor as directed.
  • Assist donors with their contributions, unload donations and place stock in appropriate warehouse location.
  • Inform your supervisor of all customer complaints, comments and concerns regarding customer service, prices, merchandise, etc.
  • Work in compliance with OH&S Act and Regulations and abide by The Salvation Army’s health and safety policies and procedures.

Working Conditions

Perform other position related duties as assigned.

  • This is a temporary part -time position based on 30 hours per week.
  • Hours of work and work schedule will be set as per Thrift Store operational requirements Monday to Saturday, 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and includes a ½ hour unpaid meal break when applicable. Flexibility in scheduling is required.
  • Ability to stand for long periods with frequent twisting, bending, crouching, and reaching is required
  • Ability to lift/move 29 pounds.
  • The Manager will set the hours of work and work schedule.

Conditions Of Employment

  • Submit as required a Police Record Check (vulnerable sector check) that is acceptable to The Salvation Army in its sole discretion.
  • This position is funded in part through the Canada Summer Jobs Program and the following represents the applicant criteria:
  • aged 15 to 30 years at the beginning of the employment period;
  • be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act for the duration
  • of the employment*; and,
  • holds a valid Social Insurance Number;and,
  • be legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial or territorial legislation and regulations.
  • *International students are not eligible participants. International students include anyone who is temporarily in Canada for studies and who is not a Canadian citizen, permanent resident,
  • or person who has been granted refugee status in Canada.
  • An ongoing condition of employment is the ability to maintain immigration status to legally remain and work in Canada which is supported by valid immigration documents.

Education, Qualifications And Certifications

  • Currently attending High School, or have graduated
  • Some related experience in warehouse processing or goods distribution would be a definite asset.
  • Knowledge of lifting guidelines would be a definite asset.
  • Cash handling experience is required.
  • Brand awareness would be a definite asset.
  • Basic math skills required to calculate discounts and percentages as well as reading skills.
  • Knowledge and experience using a cash register, debit machine and/or credit card processing is a definite asset.

  • Ability to undergo applicable screening and background checks successfully that are satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion.
  • Ability and willingness to develop an understanding and support for the mission and purpose of The Salvation Army in Canada and its implications as related to position responsibilities.

Compensation

The target hiring range for this position is $17.20 to $18.76 with a maximum of $22.51.

Placement in the salary range will be based on factors such as market conditions, internal equity, and candidate experience, skills, and qualifications relevant to the role.
