Do you have experience working on roads and maintaining asphalt? The City of Victoria is seeking a Truck Driver – Road Maintenance to join our Roads and Bridges team.

This role involves more than just driving; you’ll operate a crane-equipped, single-axle dump truck to move materials and equipment to job sites, and assist with road maintenance and construction projects across the city.

This is an active, outdoor role where no two days are the same. You’ll perform tasks like patching potholes, placing steel plates, assisting with snow and ice control, and working with tools and machinery to keep streets safe.

Our ideal candidate has proven experience in road maintenance and asphalt work, along with a Class 5 BC driver’s license with air brake and overweight trailer endorsements. If you enjoy outdoor work, teamwork, and community impact, we’d love to hear from you.

Position Functions

Operate a crane-equipped service truck for transporting materials and performing road maintenance functions.

Key Duties

  1. Operate a crane-equipped service truck for transporting materials such as asphalt, gravel, and concrete; read engineering plans and grade sheets; hand locate underground services; load and unload materials using cranes, forklifts, or other equipment.
  2. Perform pre- and post-trip inspections; report repairs; check safety equipment; complete logs and refuel trucks as needed.
  3. Respond to material requests; determine delivery priorities; move equipment and materials; clean job sites; dispose of debris.
  4. Conduct road inspections; repair minor failures; assist with asphalt raking; instruct staff in crane operation; manage traffic signs; perform flagging duties; maintain inventory; monitor asphalt supply; produce precast concrete barriers.
  5. Place paving tins and steel plates during resurfacing; perform snow and ice control using specialized equipment.
  6. Perform related duties as qualified.

Independence

Work is assigned and reviewed by a supervisor, with major issues escalated accordingly.

Working Conditions

  • Physical effort: frequent heavy lifting and shoveling.
  • Mental effort: normal.
  • Visual/Auditory effort: normal.
  • Work environment: outdoor, often in all weather conditions, on construction sites, near traffic.

Qualifications

  • Grade 12 education.
  • Snow and Ice Removal Certification (12 hours).
  • Traffic Control Person Certification (16 hours).
  • Valid Class 5 BC Driver’s License with air brake and overweight trailer endorsements.
  • Minimum 2 years of road maintenance experience or equivalent education and experience.
