The Opportunity

As the Truck and Coach/Automotive Technician Apprentice, you will participate in the development and implementation of all repair and preventative maintenance programs, and perform testing, diagnosis, repairs and preventative maintenance on all types of buses and equipment.

Under the technical direction of the Leadhead Truck and Coach/Automotive Technician, this position has the following accountabilities:

  • Participates in implementation of repair prioritization and preventative maintenance programs and servicing.
  • Assists with and tests, diagnoses and repairs computer-controlled engine and power train components, braking, electrical, suspension, hydraulic, heating and ventilation systems.
  • Performs required schedule preventative maintenance servicing on prescribed vehicles and equipment.
  • Assists with legislated six-month bus safety inspections.
  • Provides technical direction regarding proper operation, minor maintenance servicing and minor repairs to operating personnel as required.
  • Records and provides accurate data on repair orders regarding all servicing repairs and conditions found.
  • Tests all vehicles and equipment after performing P.M. maintenance or repair to ensure safety.

Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate will have the following:

  • Possess a valid Certificate of Qualification as an Automotive Technician (310S), as outlined by Skilled Trades Ontario; or
  • Current enrollment/agreement as Automotive Technician Apprenticeship (310S) with minimum completed level 2, as outlined by Skilled Trades Ontario; or
  • Current enrollment/agreement as Truck and Coach Technician (310T) with completion of level 1, as outlined by Skilled Trades Ontario.
  • Must be able to demonstrate education as well as industry knowledge and experience.
  • Must be proficient in the use of computers and current related software.

Please note while an apprentice is completing their apprenticeship program, they will be paid a percentage of the rate for the Truck & Coach / Automotive Technician as outlined in the ATU Schedule B job classification and wage rates.

The wage progression for the apprentice program is listed below:

  • Level 1 in-school training and 2,000 hours of on-the-job training completed -- $27.90/hr (70% of Truck & Coach / Automotive Technician Wage).
  • Level 2 in-school training and 4,000 hours of on-the-job training completed -- $31.89/hr (80% of Truck & Coach / Automotive Technician Wage).
  • Level 3 in-school training and 6,000 hours of on-the-job training completed -- $35.87/hr (90% of Truck & Coach / Automotive Technician Wage).
  • Has obtained (310T) Truck & Coach Certificate of Qualification -- $39.86/hr (100% of Truck & Coach / Automotive Technician Wage).
