Position Summary

The Support Worker provides a range of supports for chronically homeless individuals living in the community, many of whom have concurrent mental illness, substance use, and/or physical health issues. Using a strengths-based model, the Support Worker participates with tenants and Service Plan Coordinators in the development and implementation of service plans, including assessment; goal setting, achievement, and review; resource acquisition; and monitoring in the areas of daily living, financial, vocational/educational, social supports, health, harm reduction, culture, recovery, and leisure/recreational supports. The Support Worker works closely and collaboratively with other direct service staff, family, and external service providers, advocating for access and rights as needed. The Support Worker also provides daily supports including medication administration, building security, crisis intervention, health and recreational groups, and general problem solving.

Job: Float Support Worker, Triage, Permanent, Full-Time, 1 FTE
Salary Range: $31.56 – $33.28 (BCGEU, Grid 34)
Hours: 75 bi-weekly
Schedule: Thursday – Monday, 3:30PM – 11:30PM; includes a 30-minute unpaid meal break.
Work Site: Triage, BC
Start Date: June 10, 2025 or ASAP

A clear British Columbia Vulnerable Sector Criminal Record Check for working with vulnerable adults and/or children is a condition of employment with RainCity Housing. Applicants must be willing and able to receive a clearance under the Criminal Record Review Act.

Standard Medication Training or a commitment to partaking in Standard Medication Training is required.

Gender is a bona fide occupational requirement: men (trans, cis), gender diverse, and Two-Spirit staff only please.

Purpose

The purpose of the float position is to fill shifts efficiently and prevent overtime and staffing shortages.

Procedure

Each Float Support Worker will be assigned to a Home Program. As shift vacancies occur in programs, the Float will be deployed to fill the vacancies. Float staff can be deployed prior to callouts to relief staff, overtime, or in emergencies to prevent staffing shortages. If a vacancy does not occur, the Float staff will work in their home program.

Program Summary

The Triage Centre provides emergency housing and care for people living with mental health, substance use, and other challenges. It has 28 shelter rooms, allowing clients to stay longer than at most shelters, facilitating access to support services based on individual needs. Referrals are accepted from individuals, hospitals, community service providers, health-care practitioners, employment assistance workers, and other shelters.

QUALIFICATIONS

Many forms of education and experience are valued, including volunteering and lived experience of mental illness, addiction, or homelessness. Minimum requirements include:

  • A Diploma in community social services.
  • Two (2) years of recent, related work experience with emphasis on mental health, addictions, homelessness, and/or social services.
  • Or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
  • Current First Aid and CPR certification.
  • Class 5 Drivers’ License and acceptable driver’s abstract is preferred.

  • Knowledge of substance use, physical health, HIV, and Hepatitis C support resources.
  • Knowledge of the housing continuum and supported housing systems.
  • Understanding oppression and marginalization related to homelessness.
