Tree Pruner 1

Competition No: 2026-194

Duration: Regular Full Time

Salary: $37.34/hour

Schedule: 80 hours bi-weekly; Monday to Friday from 7:00 AM – 3:30 PM

This position works in the Urban Forestry organizational unit. This is hazardous work and is performed under the direction of a supervisor who checks the work during progress for attainment of desired objectives and adherence to required safety procedures. The incumbent climbs parks and boulevard trees using ladders, ropes and safety harness or elevating equipment; prunes park and boulevard trees at heights or ground level using power saws and other hand tools; assists in tree planting and removing operations, care and maintenance of newly planted trees and pest control management; performs cable and bracing and other heavy manual tasks related to the work; operates a chipping machine as required; performs minor servicing and maintenance tasks on equipment operated; assists in setting out safety cones, warning signs and traffic control barriers under the direction of a supervisor. Performs related work as required.

Qualifications include up to high school graduation supplemented by related technical training and sound experience in working at heights, or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Considerable knowledge of the methods, practices, tools, equipment and safety precautions involved in pruning, removals, and planting boulevard and park trees. Ability to perform hazardous climbing and pruning tasks at considerable heights above ground. Skill in the use of a variety of power and hand tools used in tree pruning and planting work; use of safety harness and ropes used in climbing trees; the operation of a chipping machine; the operation and servicing of equipment used in the work and in the use of tools used in minor servicing and repair tasks. A valid Driver’s License for the Province of British Columbia is required. The successful candidate will be required to accept standby and call-out work as required by the department.

Copies of relevant professional certificates, degrees, or tickets will be required at the time of the interview.
