Job summary

Canadian Mental Health Association – Peel Dufferin Branch seeks a Trauma Therapist to provide trauma-focused therapy for individuals with mental health and addiction needs. The role emphasizes TF-CBT, crisis management, and collaborative treatment planning with a focus on safety and resilience.

Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in psychology, social work or related field.
  • Registration with relevant regulatory college/registering body.
  • Excellent understanding of Trauma Focused – Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT).
  • Minimum 3 years of experience providing TF-CBT (individual and group).
  • Experience with complex mental health and addictions issues.
  • Experience with self-harming or high-risk behaviors.
  • 3+ years in health services with complex clinical issues.
  • Experience implementing TF-CBT is an asset.
  • Experience working with high-risk populations.
  • Cultural sensitivity with Black, African and Caribbean communities.
  • Training in non-violent crisis intervention, ASIST, CPR and First Aid.
  • Fluency in French or Peel-region language is an asset.
  • Valid Canadian driver’s license and access to a vehicle.
  • Satisfactory Vulnerable Sector Screening (Police Check).

Responsibilities

  • Conduct individual therapy sessions adhering to TF-CBT protocol.
  • Conduct comprehensive mental health assessments.
  • Deliver therapeutic treatment to progress toward goals, including crisis management.
  • Plan, organize and co-facilitate TF-CBT skills groups.
  • Participate in TF-CBT team consultation.
  • Maintain clinical documentation including files, assessments and progress notes.
  • Communicate assessments and plans within practice/agency guidelines.
  • Maintain record-keeping and outcome measurement tools as required.
  • Participate on agency and community committees and workgroups.
  • Collaborate with program teams internal and external to CMHA Peel Dufferin.
  • Monitor clients’ mental health and initiate wellness interventions.
  • Provide education on mental health and wellness to clients and families.
  • Establish follow-up plans for clients prior to discharge when possible.

We are looking for a full-time Trauma Therapist to join our Black Health and Social Services (BHSS) team!

As a Trauma Therapist you will provide responsive integrated care to individuals seeking treatment for substance use/concurrent disorders and collaborate on treatment plans and clinical case presentations. The focus of the Trauma Therapist is to minimize the potential harm and re-traumatization and to enhance safety and resilience for clients with mental health and addiction challenges. Furthermore, the Therapist will increase the attention to the impact of trauma on client’s lives and well-being, reduce harm and improve system responses for everyone.

Status: Full-time contract until February 2027, 37.5 hours per week. The successful candidate may be required to work some evenings. This posting is for an active vacancy.

Base Salary: $75,509.31- $89,160.03 annually (Candidate qualifications will be considered when determining the starting salary).

Location: This position is based out of our office at 19 Rutherford Rd. S., Brampton, Ontario. Due to the nature of the program, this role is on-site and community based.

What you will do
  • Conduct individual therapy sessions adhering to Trauma Focused-Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (TF-CBT) protocol and best practices
  • Conduct comprehensive mental health assessments
  • Devise and deliver therapeutic treatment to ensure progress toward goals, including management of crisis and life-threatening behaviors, adhering to the TF-CBT treatment model
  • Plan, organize and co-facilitate TF-CBT skills groups
  • Participate in TF-CBT team consultation
  • Maintain professional documentation, in the form of clinical client files, assessments, progress reports and discharge summaries
  • Communicate information, both oral and written, regarding assessments, treatment plans and evaluations to the treatment team, client, referral source and other caregivers within practice/agency/legal guidelines
  • Maintain appropriate record-keeping/documentation, statistical and outcome measurement tools as required by CMHA/Peel Dufferin policies and procedures
  • Participate on agency and community committees and workgroups as requested
  • Work effectively and collaboratively with program teams, internal and external to CMHA/Peel Dufferin
  • Monitor clients’ mental health and initiate interventions as required to promote wellness
  • Provide education on mental health, illnesses and wellness to clients and their families/other supports
  • Establish a follow-up plan for clients prior to discharge, when possible.

What you need to join our team
  • A Masters level degree in psychology, social work or relevant health or social science field
  • Registration with relevant regulatory college/registering body
  • Excellent understanding of Trauma Focused – Cognitive Behavioral Therapy
  • Minimum of 3 years’ experience in providing individual and group-based comprehensive Trauma Focused – Cognitive Behavioral Therapy
  • Experience working with individuals who have complex mental health and addictions issues
  • Experience working with individuals who engage in self-harming and self-injurious behaviors or who are at high risk to do so
  • Minimum 3 years of experience within the health services sector with in-depth knowledge of complex clinical issues
  • Experience implementing TF-CBT is a definite asset
  • Experience working with population displaying high-risk behaviors
  • Demonstrated ability to work with multi-need clients with complex needs utilizing a goal-focused approach
  • Demonstrated cultural sensitivity and ability to effectively work with Black, African and Caribbean communities.
  • Completion of training in non-violent crisis intervention, ASIST, CPR and First Aid Certification Knowledge of trauma-informed care and how to apply it during client interactions
  • Fluency in French, or other language reflected in Peel region, is considered an asset
  • Valid Canadian driver’s license and access to an insured automobile in good repair
  • A satisfactory Vulnerable Sector Screening (Police Check) report
