A Transportation Engineer will be responsible for performing and directing transportation engineering duties on multi-discipline design projects of moderate to large scope, including projects that involve only transportation engineering.
General responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Performing transportation engineering duties as a lead project engineer, including analysis and design of interstates, interchanges, urban roadways, bridges, site grading, stormwater management, hydrology and hydraulics, storm drainage systems, culverts, erosion control, and site plan preparation; supervising and directing EI/EIT staff; coordinating with other disciplines; leading contract document production; and managing project budgets and schedules.
- Collaborating within a multi-discipline design team.
- Meeting with clients to define and validate project scope.
- Preparing marketing and presentation materials as directed.
- Seeking guidance from senior engineers and department heads to resolve technical and coordination issues.
- Supervising EI/EITs and CAD Technicians, especially on complex problems.
- Supporting bidding processes, including preparing addenda, amendments, and bid tabulation.
- Engaging in construction phase activities such as site visits, RFI responses, shop review, and record drawing preparation.
- Adhering to quality control practices.
- Working with management and project teams, including architects, engineers, interior designers, and landscape architects.
- Participating in team meetings and coordinating efforts.
- Supervising and mentoring junior transportation staff.
Project responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Performing senior transportation engineer tasks as directed.
- Preparing scope and fee proposals for transportation projects.
- Conducting project code analysis.
- Preparing transportation drawings and specifications for various project stages.
- Reviewing calculations and work products from team members.
- Coordinating drawings with specifications and other disciplines.
- Incorporating QC and Gray Team comments.
- Responding to RFIs and owner comments.
- Reviewing and responding to construction submittals.
- Performing QA/QC reviews.
- Managing discipline-specific budgets and schedules.
Education, Technology, and Experience:
- Graduation from an ABET-accredited engineering program in Civil or related disciplines.
- Post-graduate degrees may be considered favorably.
- Typically 4+ years of leadership experience in transportation design.
- Licensed Professional Engineer (PE) in at least one US state; reciprocity preferred.
- Understanding of sustainable design principles; LEED AP preferred.
- Additional certifications like PTOE encouraged.
- Active participation in professional organizations desirable.
- Proficiency with company software and design tools.
- Experience with grading, stormwater, hydrology, hydraulics, culvert design, and erosion control is highly desirable.
