Job description

Nutrien is a leading provider of crop inputs and services, and our business results make a positive impact on the world. Our purpose, Feeding the Future, is the reason we come to work each day. We’re guided by our culture of care and our core values: We put safety first. We act with integrity. We are stronger together. We deliver with excellence.

Through the collective expertise of our nearly 26,000 employees, we operate a world‑class network of production, distribution, and ag‑retail facilities. We efficiently serve growers’ needs and strive to provide a more profitable, sustainable, and secure future for all stakeholders. Help us raise the expectation of what an agriculture company can be and grow your career with Nutrien.

The Transport Safety and Regulatory Manager provides technical expertise, governance support, and operational guidance to enable the safe and compliant transport of Nutrien’s products from our upstream operations and through our logistics and distribution activities. The role supports transport risk management across multiple modes and jurisdictions, including road, rail, and marine, and helps ensure shipments are planned and executed in line with regulatory and company requirements.

This includes regulatory interpretation, carrier oversight, training and education, audits, and incident support, while also driving continuous improvement in transportation safety performance.

What’s Your Role
  • Interpret and apply hazardous materials / dangerous goods transportation regulations across jurisdictions and transport modes, ensuring compliance with US and Canadian authorities, such as the US Department of Transportation (DoT), the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA), the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA), the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA), the US Coast Guard (USCG), and Transport Canada’s Transportation of Dangerous Goods (TDG) program.
  • Provide timely, practical regulatory guidance to enable safe, compliant transportation operations.
  • Support compliant classification, packaging, documentation, marking/placarding, emergency response information, and security planning as required.
  • Contribute to the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of Nutrien’s Transportation Safety requirements within the Nutrien Way management system.
  • Support transport risk assessments, critical control development and verification, and management of change for carriers, routes, equipment, and terminals.
  • Assist with pre‑qualification, vetting, and periodic assessment of transportation service providers.
  • Partner with operations and support functions to embed safety and regulatory requirements into contracts and service agreements.
  • Support development, delivery, and maintenance of role‑based hazmat / dangerous goods training for employees and contractors.
  • Verify training compliance and support competency assurance activities for personnel involved in shipping, loading/unloading, and documentation preparation.
  • Provide technical regulatory and safety support during transportation incidents, including notifications, investigations, and corrective actions.
  • Support transport incident emergency preparedness through coordination with emergency response teams.
  • Support compliance assurance activities, including audits, inspections, and regulatory recordkeeping.
  • Contribute to transport safety performance metrics, dashboards, and data‑informed improvement initiatives.
  • Serve as a trusted technical advisor and field trainer to operations, legal, and SHE&S partners.
  • Engage with and represent Nutrien with relevant regulators and external stakeholders (e.g., FRA, TDG, Chemistry Trade Alliance, The Fertilizer Institute).
What You’ll Bring
  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant discipline such as Safety, Engineering, Supply Chain, or similar.
  • 10+ years’ experience with transportation regulatory compliance, including hazardous materials / dangerous goods.
  • Strong working knowledge of various transportation modes (road, rail, marine, air) and their regulatory requirements.
  • Demonstrated skills to build trusted and collaborative relationships, with the ability to translate regulatory expectations into practical, operations-focused requirements and guidance.
  • Strong leadership and communication skills, with demonstrated ability to influence at all organizational levels.
  • Competent user of Microsoft Office and Microsoft 365.
  • Experience in multimodal and multi‑jurisdictional transportation environments.
  • Experience supporting audits, inspections, and regulatory enforcement actions.
