Job Overview:
The Transplant Assistant works under the direction of the Transplant Coordinator RN by completing direct and indirect patient care tasks which do not require a licensed practitioner, in accordance with RWJUH policies and procedures. The assistant also participates in department QAPI activities.
Qualifications:
- High School Diploma or Equivalent.
- Ability to read, write, speak, understand, and communicate in English sufficiently to perform duties of the position.
- Completion of CNA course or at least one year of experience in an acute care facility, or equivalent experience in a sub-acute or long-term care facility, or a nursing student who has completed one clinical rotation.
- Current CPR certification.
Essential Functions:
Outpatient Clinic
- Prepare clinic supplies, including patient education and chart packets.
- Facilitate communication and patient flow through clinic in a timely manner.
- Greet patients and perform accurate measurements (temperature, pulse, BP, respiratory rate, weight), report alert level results to RN.
- Assist transplant physicians/coordinators with dressing changes, physical exams, and clinic procedures.
- Gather records or schedule testing during clinic visits.
- Assist transplant surgeons in preparing and scheduling PATS and other surgical procedures.
Pre-Transplant Patient Responsibilities
- Assist pre-transplant coordinators with evaluations, obtain outside records, and track testing and consultation results.
- Schedule testing as directed.
- Enter information into PATS database and document in patient records.
- Participate in ESRD meetings, set agendas, and prepare minutes.
- Maintain current waitlist status and facilitate communication with dialysis centers and HLA labs.
Living Donor Responsibilities
- Follow-up on potential living donors.
- Assist with scheduling and documenting donor evaluations.
Post Transplant
- Transcribe labs for review.
- Schedule biopsies, infusions, and surgeries.
- Assist with dressing changes and exams.
Office Functions
- Distribute patient results and records.
- Manage record requests per HIPAA policies.
- Support front office staff as needed.

- Keep current with clinical and administrative knowledge.
- Maintain required certifications and competencies.
- Perform additional duties as assigned.
