A leading engineering firm is seeking a Transmission Line Team Lead in Calgary, AB to support their Transmission & Distribution practice. The role involves overseeing transmission line design projects, mentoring engineers, and ensuring high-quality engineering solutions. With a minimum of 10 years in transmission line design, qualified candidates will be versed in PLS-POLE and PLS-TOWER software, possess strong analytical and communication skills, and hold a Professional Engineer Licensure. This is a hybrid position combining both office and remote work.

Kosmos Group is looking for a Transmission Line Team Lead to support our growing Transmission & Distribution practice in Calgary, AB, Canada. This is a hybrid position, working some days in the office and working some days from home. The successful candidate will be involved in all facets of transmission line routing and design. We are looking for a seller-doer with the ability to develop client relationships.

In this position, you will leverage your T&D experience and leadership strengths to develop, optimize, and grow our Transmission team in Calgary ensuring the office delivers the highest-quality engineering designs. The Calgary Team Lead will work closely with the Transmission leadership in managing daily administrative functions, resource forecasting, quality control and workload of the Calgary team to ensure efficient utilization of resources and exceeding throughput expectations. This position will report to the Transmission Line Department Manager. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

Technical Execution & Project Oversight

• of transmission lines ranging from 69kV to 500kV.
• design criteria and specifications for the transmission line design and procurement of materials.
• project design alternatives and corresponding cost estimates.
• design activities to ensure installation and operations will comply with specifications, codes, and client requirements.
• independent reviews of work performed by others, including calculations, drawing preparation, and transmission line models based on PLS-CADD.
• with industry codes and standards, and have experience as the technical lead on projects.
• as Engineer of Record in preparing construction documents, including plan and profile drawings, structure loading trees, and foundation and assembly drawings
• as the Engineer of Record in preparing specifications and project design criteria. Provide construction support for the high-voltage transmission line project.
• for a seller-doer with the ability to develop client relationships.
• and/or support PM by meeting with clients.
• weekly or bi-weekly project updates and project forecasting.

Responsibilities

• Plan, analyze, and design a variety of transmission line projects primarily with the utilities and other types of projects with multiple stakeholders.
• Leading the team in Calgary to foster an engaged, accountable, and healthy team environment by focusing on collaboration, communication, and career development
• In addition, he/she will report directly to the Transmission Department Manager and will have transmission line project planning, analysis, and design responsibilities.
• Solid understanding of transmission line project scope & deliverables. Having the ability to identify scope creep and provide immediate input and coordinate with the Project Engineer or Project Manager to remedy the situation.
• Coordinating with engineers and technical staff to ensure that the projects’ needs are met in a timely and effective manner
• Coordinating with suppliers, clients, and the rest of the design disciplines
• Lead meetings with clients, other stakeholders, and contractors to review project needs and coordinate field conditions.
• Writing and editing technical reports and engineering studies.
• Preparing plans, specifications, and design packages for transmission line projects
• Producing technical presentations and design drawings
• Perform detailed studies, review plans, transmission line modelling, and design tasks associated with utilities or other types of projects, under the supervision of a project manager.
• Support construction projects with field site visits and construction observation duties, responding to RFIs
• Certify that company design practices are followed as they relate to their Practice/Discipline deliverables, and they act as a focal point for the company Project Practice/Discipline Team Members.
• Schedule and coordinate peer reviews of said tasks, third-party Practice/Discipline quality reviews of deliverables.
• Perform quality reviews for transmission projects, including using design-specific tools such as PLS-CADD, PLS-TOWER and PLS-POLE
• Support the project manager and group proposal manager to prepare proposal man-hour estimates and technical scopes to support the sales effort.
• Provide guidance and instruction to the transmission engineering department, mentoring and guiding less experienced engineers
• Approving and Stamping designs and drawings, and serving as EOR (Engineer of Record)

Qualifications

Required

• degree in civil or electrical engineering from an ABET-accredited program
• Minimum 10 years in transmission line design and field transmission construction experience
• English knowledge of all three competencies of Speaking, Reading, and Writing.
• Professional Engineer Licensure
• Advanced working knowledge of PLS-POLE and PLS-TOWER
• Advanced Working knowledge of GO95, NESC, and Wildfire Mitigation is a plus
• Advanced Knowledge in design, calculations, and design systems/software to execute production
• Advanced Proficiency using Microsoft Office suite (e.g., Excel, Word, and Outlook)
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
• Strong written and verbal English communication skills
• strong interpersonal skills with the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff, management, clients, and external agencies
