Position Description
Talented PhD scientists with relevant postdoctoral experience are invited to apply for an independent research scientist position focused on geriatrics, ageing, family caregiving, and patient- and family-centered models of care. The successful candidate will be granted the Translational Clinical Scientist status at Sinai Health, in the Department of Medicine. The appointment as a Translational Research Scientist is an initial fixed term of 5 years.
We seek an applicant who will develop an innovative, outstanding and independent program combining clinical and translational research on advancing the understanding of the experiences and support needs of older adults with complex health needs, their caregivers, and their clinicians with an end goal of optimizing the health and well-being of older adults across the continuum of care. The ideal candidate will demonstrate their ability to conduct research effectively in collaboration with geriatrician clinician scientists, educators, quality improvement experts, and multidisciplinary researchers.
The successful candidate will join the Healthy Ageing and Geriatrics Program at Mount Sinai Hospital, as part of the Division of General Internal Medicine and Geriatrics, Department of Medicine, Sinai Health and the University Health Network. The Section of Geriatric Medicine at Sinai Health and the University Health Network is one of the largest and most academically productive hospital-based group of geriatricians, nurses and allied health professionals in Canada. Mount Sinai Hospital is part of Sinai Health, a fully-affiliated teaching hospital with the University of Toronto and is also associated with the Lunenfeld-Tanenbaum Research Institute, an institute of international recognition in research.
The successful applicant must also be eligible for a Status-Only faculty appointment in the Rehabilitation Sciences Institute, Temerty Faculty of Medicine, at the minimum rank of Assistant Professor at the University of Toronto. They will be expected to secure an appointment to the School of Graduate Studies, and an affiliation with any relevant research institute at the University Health Network (reflecting that the Section of Geriatric Medicine is within the Division of General Internal Medicine and Geriatrics at Sinai Health and the University Health Network).
The successful candidate will be expected to apply for competitive grant funding and salary support awards to support their scholarly work. As a non-clinical member of the Section of Geriatric Medicine, the successful candidate will be expected to contribute to the academic mission of our Section, including providing mentorship and supervision to learners where appropriate.
Qualifications
The successful candidate should hold a relevant PhD and have demonstrated a productive post-doctoral career defined by their record of relevant peer-reviewed publications and evidence of external funding. Preference will be given to applicants with previous experience in geriatrics, ageing and caregiving research. The applicant should have extensive experience in qualitative methodologies including co-design and grounded theory; participatory action research and patient and family caregiver research engagement; knowledge synthesis including meta-analysis, scoping reviews and systematic reviews; mixed- and multi-methods and quantitative observational studies. The applicant should further have experience in supervising graduate trainees. Experience in managing research projects including associated finances is a plus.
