Job summary

The City of Medicine Hat is hiring a casual Transit Operator & Service Worker to safely operate transit vehicles, assist riders, and perform essential behind-the-scenes tasks. The role is on-site with a starting wage of 25.96 CAD per hour and offers flexible weekly opportunities for ongoing growth within the public transit team.

  • Provide backup driving support based on operational needs.

What You’ll Do
  • Safely operate transit vehicles while delivering professional, customer-focused service.

In this combined role, your day may include preparing buses for service, safely transporting passengers across the city, assisting riders with mobility needs, and communicating route information, all while maintaining a professional, customer‑focused approach. You'll also support behind‑the‑scenes operations by cleaning buses, completing basic mechanical checks, and helping maintain transit stops. With flexible, varied duties and the opportunity to step in as backup when needed, each shift offers meaningful community impact and hands‑on experience.

What You Bring

  • Flexibility to work rotating shifts, be available on short notice, and provide at least five days per week of on‑call availability during operational hours:
    • Transit Operators: 6:30 am to 11:00 pm
    • Service Workers: 6:00 am to 1:00 am
Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • A valid Alberta Class 2 Driver's License with airbrake endorsement and a clean driving record.
  • Valid Standard First Aid, CPR-C & WHMIS certification is considered an asset.
  • Experience working with persons with disabilities is an asset.
  • Ability to safely operate larger vehicles is considered an asset.
  • This position has been identified as Safety Sensitive and requires the completion of a satisfactory pre‑employment drug screen, which includes testing for cannabis use.
