Job summary

Northwest Employment Works Hospital in Northwestern Ontario is seeking a Transfusion Safety Officer to lead transfusion safety, hemovigilance, and blood utilization across the organization. Reporting to Laboratory Medicine leadership, the TSO will develop policy, coordinate education for interdisciplinary teams, monitor compliance, and drive quality improvement while aligning with PFCC values.

Qualifications

• Diploma and/or Degree in Medical Laboratory Science.
• Current registration in good standing with the College of Medical Laboratory Technologists of Ontario (CMLTO)
• Minimum of five (5) years recent acute care experience, preferably in Transfusion, including patient safety/quality roles.
• Experience in transfusion practices, hemovigilance, quality assurance, policy development, and incident investigation required.
• Experience working with regulatory and accreditation standards related to transfusion medicine preferred.

Responsibilities

• Provide clinical and technical leadership in transfusion safety, hemovigilance, and blood utilization practices.
• Educate, surveil, develop policies, and drive quality improvement across the organization.
• Ensure regulatory compliance and promote patient safety principles in transfusion medicine.

About the role:

Reporting to the Manager of Transfusion Medicine, the Transfusion Safety Officer (TSO) provides clinical and technical leadership in transfusion safety, hemovigilance, and blood utilization practices across the organization.

Reporting to the Manager/Director of Laboratory Medicine and working collaboratively with Transfusion Medicine, Nursing, Quality & Risk, and Medical Leadership, the TSO supports safe, evidence‑based transfusion practices through education, surveillance, policy development, quality improvement, and regulatory compliance.

EMPLOYMENT REQUIREMENTS:

Education/Experience:

• Diploma and/or Degree in Medical Laboratory Science.
• Current registration in good standing with the College of Medical Laboratory Technologists of Ontario (CMLTO)
• Minimum of five (5) years recent acute care experience, preferably in Transfusion, including patient safety/quality roles.
• Experience in transfusion practices, hemovigilance, quality assurance, policy development, and incident investigation required.
• Experience working with regulatory and accreditation standards related to transfusion medicine preferred.

Skills/Abilities:

• Demonstrated knowledge of transfusion medicine standards, blood product administration practices, and hemovigilance principles.
• Strong analytical, critical thinking, and problem‑solving skills.
• Excellent organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.
• Ability to develop and deliver education to interdisciplinary healthcare teams.
• Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast‑paced healthcare environment.
• Proficient computer skills including Microsoft Office applications and electronic health information systems.
• Demonstrated ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines.
• Knowledge of applicable legislation, accreditation standards, and patient safety principles.

Assets:

• Certification in Transfusion Medicine or Quality Improvement.
• Experience with utilization management, accreditation processes, and quality improvement methodologies.
• Teaching or adult education experience.

Salary Range: $47.820 to 59.780
