Overview

Junior Transformer TechnicianLocation: Calgary, AlbertaEmployment Type: Full Time

About the Role: Shermco is seeking a motivated and service-oriented Junior Transformer Technician to join our growing team! In this entry-level role, you will assist senior technicians with the installation, preventative maintenance, inspection, and troubleshooting of transformers. This is an excellent opportunity to gain hands-on field experience while developing your technical skills in a supportive, safety-first environment.

Responsibilities

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assist with transformer service operations, including inspection, assembly, vacuum oil filling, testing, and commissioning.
  • Support field operations while maintaining compliance with company and industry safety standards.
  • Participate in troubleshooting and escalate more complex issues to senior technicians.
  • Maintain accurate documentation of work performed, equipment used, and project progress.
  • Communicate effectively with peers, management, and clients regarding work activities and safety concerns.
  • Maintain tools and equipment in safe, clean, and functional condition.
  • Follow all quality assurance protocols and assist with pre-completion inspections.
  • Commit to ongoing learning and technical skill development through on-the-job training.
Qualifications

Requirements:

  • High school diploma or equivalent required; technical diploma or relevant trade certification preferred.
  • 1–2 years of related field experience, or equivalent education and training.
  • Basic understanding of transformer operations and electrical/mechanical systems.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical documents, diagrams, and work scopes.
  • Familiarity with the use of hand tools, power tools, and measuring devices.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office; willing to learn company-specific software.
  • Strong work ethic, attention to detail, and commitment to teamwork and safety.
  • Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record; Class 1 license is an asset.
  • Willingness and ability to travel frequently (up to 85%) and work flexible hours, including weekends and holidays, based on project needs.
  • Ability to work in the United States is considered a major asset.
  • Any other duties you are trained to do.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Technical background in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering Technology.
  • Journeyman Electrician or Millwright certification.
  • Experience with transformer oil processing, testing, or high-voltage equipment.
