A Transformer Technician is responsible for preparing equipment, project sites, and the installation and maintenance of transformers under the direction of field leadership.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Conducting transformer service operations under direct supervision.
- Maintain clear communication regarding project details, safety, and environmental concerns.
- Willingness of junior technicians to take direction in the safe and effective operation of equipment.
- Assist in transformer testing and troubleshooting.
- Willingness to learn all aspects of transformer service tasks.
- Actively participate in quality assurance activities, including pre-completion inspections.
- Participate in planning and coordinating field projects, managing resources, and preparing reports.
- Ensure vehicles, tools, and equipment are in safe operating condition and perform necessary maintenance.
- Under direct supervision, complete service and repair work at customer location(s).
- Must be able to work weekly and/or weekend overtime. Holiday work is scheduled as per business/customer need.
- Comply with all safety requirements, including proper use of personal protective equipment and operation of equipment in a safe and competent manner.
- Keep assigned work area clean, organized, and orderly. Ensure all safety and industrial hygiene requirements are maintained.
- Work with team members to effectively complete work assignments. Receive information from team members regarding customer needs and product requirements and utilize this information to perform one’s function.
Job Requirements:
- High School diploma/GED and a minimum of 1 year of experience in a related field.
- The ability and willingness to be mentored in the following areas:
- Assembly, maintenance, and troubleshooting of transformers and related accessories.
- Interpret work scope, drawings, diagrams, and technical documents proficiently.
- Operate transformer oil processing equipment with complete documentation.
- Support testing of transformers and accessories, documenting results proficiently.
- Manage vehicle and equipment maintenance.
- Develop communication skills and professional client interaction abilities.
- Proven mechanical skills and/or experience with different types of low and high voltage equipment (requirement varies by location).
- Able to effectively problem solve.
- Basic computer skills for data entry, looking up information, and/or creating reports.
- Able to communicate orally and in writing; follow written and oral directions, reading work orders and/or specs as assigned; work in a team environment and communicate with team, various departments, and/or customers as business needs dictate.
- Customer focused - able to meet deadlines, work on multiple projects, and produce a quality work product.
- For positions that utilize a company vehicle and construction equipment, will be required to have a valid class 5 driver’s license.
- Strong background and experience in most types of high voltage equipment through the 230 kV class.
- Willingness and ability to travel (min. 85% travel).

Working Environment: Employee will be exposed to:
- Extensive travel.
- Emergency callback procedures twenty-four hours a day. Required to work rotating shifts, which includes evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays.
- Steady rainfall, fog, snow, and freezing conditions.
- Extreme heat and/or humid conditions.
- Energized electrical work on equipment or systems operating at greater than 600 volts; extremely hazardous environments with risk of electrocution.
- Special safety precautions and/or equipment.
- Lifting and/or guiding heavy sections of materials.
- Some confined spaces and some cramped conditions.
- Chemicals used in the process.

- Must be able to ascend and descend stairs in operating unit.
- Must be able to climb up and down on ladders at varying heights with fall restraint.
- Must be able to enter and move about in confined spaces and wear personal protective equipment.
- Ability to sit, bend, stretch, twist, kneel, stoop, crouch, crawl or reach with your body, arms, and/or legs.
- May be required to push, pull, lift, and/or carry up to 100 pounds.
- Adequate olfactory and auditory abilities.
- Vision abilities include close, distance, color, peripheral vision and depth perception.
- Must display ability to read and understand job descriptions, safety/technical manuals and safety/warning signs.
- Will be required to pass physical, drug, and alcohol testing.
