Job summary

SECURE in Richmond, BC, is seeking a Transfer Station Technician to receive containerized and bulk waste, review waste documentation and scale tickets, and manage repacking of streams. You will help with waste tracking, shipping/receiving, and safety paperwork, ensuring timely completion and regulatory compliance.

The role involves field activities, facility inspections, and equipment maintenance, with a standard 40-hour workweek and potential on-call duties, in all weather conditions.

Qualifications

• Regulatory TDG knowledge and compliance with waste disposal laws.
• Experience in shipping/receiving or warehousing is beneficial.
• Post-secondary science education is advantageous.
• Strong time management and ability to work under pressure.
• Competent with MS Office and waste tracking programs.
• Attention to detail for manifests, bills of lading, and safety paperwork.
• Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions and lift heavy objects.

Responsibilities

• Update waste tracking systems and communicate with project coordinators and billing.
• Identify, verify, and receive hazardous and non-hazardous waste at the facility.
• Ensure documents meet legal requirements and SECURE guidelines.
• Package, classify, document, and store waste accurately.
• Consolidate and repack waste for efficient processing and transport.
• Perform field waste identification tests to ensure paperwork accuracy.
• Prepare waste samples for laboratory analysis as required.
• Participate in safety meetings and daily tailgate sessions.
• Perform repair and general labour tasks and assist with inspections.

Your Opportunity at SECURE

As a Transfer Station Technician, you’ll be responsible for receiving containerized and bulk hazardous and non-hazardous waste materials, reviewing and completing waste documentation and scale tickets, identifying, consolidating, and repacking various waste streams, and completing day-to-day tasks such as facility inspections and equipment maintenance.

You’ll play an important role in waste tracking, shipping and receiving, and safety documentation, helping ensure all aspects of the operation are completed in a timely manner and meet management and regulatory expectations.

This role is based in Richmond, BC.

The Team

The Richmond Waste Services team is a collaborative, customer-focused group driven by SECURE’s commitment to safety, service and entrepreneurial spirit. The team works together to understand customer needs, develop practical solutions and deliver reliable waste management services that minimize environmental impact.

Work Environment

You’ll work a standard 40-hour workweek from Monday to Friday, with occasional on-call duties. This role may require you to be flexible with shifts, extended hours and weekend work as dictated by business needs.

You’ll need to be comfortable working in challenging environments, including working outdoors in all weather conditions.

A Day in The Life

• Update waste tracking systems and communicate with Project Coordinators and the Billing team.
• Identify, verify, and receive hazardous and non-hazardous waste entering the facility.
• Ensure all required documents meet legal requirements and maintain compliance with SECURE guidelines.
• Ensure waste is accurately packaged, classified, documented, and stored.
• Consolidate and repack waste as required for efficient processing and transportation.
• Perform field-level waste identification tests as required to ensure paperwork accuracy and compliance.
• Prepare waste samples for laboratory analysis as required.
• Actively participate in safety meetings and daily tailgate meetings.
• Perform repair and maintenance tasks and general labour duties.
• Actively participate in continuous improvement activities such as Hazard Identifications, non-conformance reports, Hazard Hunts, and Inspections.
• Follow SECURE’s Occupational Health and Safety Program and contribute to a safe work environment.

Skills, Experience & Qualifications

• Technical and regulatory knowledge related to the hazardous waste disposal industry, with the ability to ensure compliance with TDG Regulations.
• Shipping and receiving or general warehousing experience would be an asset.
• Post-secondary education in Science, particularly Chemistry, Biology, Environmental Studies, or a related field, would be an asset.
• Effective time-management skills and the ability to work under pressure to meet deadlines, both independently and as part of a team.
• Competent computer skills, including MS Office, and the ability to learn SECURE’s suite of waste tracking and compliance programs.
• Strong attention to detail and the ability to accurately complete documents such as waste manifests, bills of lading, inspection reports, and safety paperwork.
• The ability to work outside in all weather conditions and spend a significant portion of each day on your feet.
• The physical ability to perform tasks including lifting, pushing, pulling, opening, or closing various containers and other heavy objects.Experience operating a forklift or other mobile equipment would be an asset.
