Job summary

MD of Lesser Slave River #124 is seeking a Transfer Station Operator to manage scale operations and yard maintenance at the Municipal District’s Transfer Station in Smith. The role involves directing traffic, screening waste, and collecting disposal fees, while ensuring safety and cleanliness.

Qualifications

Responsibilities

  • Control traffic entering or exiting the Transfer Station and direct users to disposal areas.
  • Screen waste to prevent prohibited items from being disposed of at site.
  • Collect disposal fees and forward to municipal administration.
  • Keep the area and buildings clean, including snow removal when needed.
  • Maintain a pleasant manner and sound judgment when interacting with the public.
  • Perform daily site inspections of yard, storage compounds, and recycled materials.
  • Carry out manual labor such as lifting and moving heavy objects.
  • Report damages and accidents with written incidence reports.
  • Follow the MD’s safety program and participate in safety practices.
  • Perform other duties as required.

Job description

Reporting to the Landfill Manager, the Transfer Station Operator is responsible for the scale operation and yard maintenance of the Municipal District’s Transfer Station.

Specific Accountabilities
Transfer Station Responsibilities
  • Controls traffic entering or exiting the Transfer Station, screens waste and directs users to the appropriate disposal or storage location
  • Through screening of waste, ensures prohibited wastes are not disposed of at site
  • Collects appropriate disposal fees and forwards to municipal administration office
  • Keeps area and buildings clean, including sweeping, shoveling of snow as necessary
  • Uses pleasant manner and sound judgment when dealing with the public
  • Completes daily site inspections, including maintenance and upkeep of the yard, storage compounds and recycled materials
  • Performs manual labor as necessary such as lifting and moving heavy objects
  • Reports all damages and accidents immediately and provide written incidence reports
  • Adheres to the MD’s safety program.
  • Performs other duties as required

  • Exercises discretion, diplomacy and judgement in handling sensitive information
Education and Certifications
  • High school diploma – Required
  • Valid Alberta Class 5 Driver’s License – Required

  • Must be willing to work alone and in all types of weather conditions – Required
  • Must possess good interpersonal skills in working with the public – Required

This position is based in Smith and is scheduled to work Wednesdays, Saturdays, and Sundays from 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

The starting wage for this position is $26.16 per hour, with compensation commensurate with qualifications and relevant experience.
