Training Opportunity for Water/Wastewater Plant Operator
The Kee Tas Kee Now Tribal Council is comprised of five member Nations and is responsible for providing guidance and support to the individual member First Nations in developing and achieving success in the management and administration of their own programs, with the goal of fostering self-reliance. Responsibilities
- Operate and monitor computerized systems and equipment to control water and wastewater treatment processes.
- Inspect and maintain plant systems to ensure proper function and compliance with safety and environmental standards.
- Collect, test, and analyze water and wastewater samples; adjust chemical feeds and processes to meet quality requirements.
- Read meters, gauges, and instruments to monitor output, chemical levels, and system performance.
- Perform routine security checks and respond to public inquiries and emergencies as needed.
- Maintain accurate logs, reports, and compliance records.
- Assist with equipment maintenance and support skilled trades during repairs or installations.
- Handle and mix treatment chemicals as required.
Experience, Knowledge, and Skills
- Mechanical aptitude – Ability to understand and work with pumps, valves, motors, and treatment systems.
- Analytical skills – Capable of interpreting lab results, instrument readings, and system data to make process adjustments.
- Attention to detail – Precision in monitoring systems, recording data, and following procedures to ensure safety and compliance.
- Problem-solving – Quick thinking and sound judgment in diagnosing equipment or process issues and taking corrective action.
Education and Qualifications
- High school diploma (Grade 12) or equivalent.
- Currently enrolled in or willing to pursue a Water or Wastewater Technician certification program (1-year full-time certificate program).
- Possession of a Class 3 Operator’s License with Q endorsement is an asset.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Standard First Aid, CPR, Confined Space Entry, and H2S Alive certifications are required—or willingness to obtain them.
- Demonstrated mechanical aptitude and a strong interest in learning water and wastewater operations.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a safety-focused, team-oriented environment.
- Availability to respond to emergency calls as needed.
- Completion of the AWWOA Small Systems Operator course is preferred (or willingness to complete).
- Familiarity with Orenco STEP system operation is an asset.
- Basic computer skills, with an interest in learning SCADA software and Microsoft Office applications.
Additional Requirements
- Applicants must have completed or be willing to obtain a Wastewater Technician Certificate from NAIT (1-year program). KTC will cover tuition, books, and applicable fees.
- Following program completion, candidates are required to complete 3 months of field experience in Alberta.
