About the Department of Academic Advising

Academic Advising is a developmental process assisting students in clarifying educational goals and implementing plans. Advisors play a key role in student retention, advising students at Mount Royal University.

The Training, Development, and Continuous Improvement Specialist role requires technical expertise, strategic thinking, and collaborative leadership. The role influences advising practices across the university through self-direction, judgment, and understanding of learning, quality, and change management.

About the Role

This position enhances advising quality and impact by designing and delivering training, developing resources, and leading evidence-based improvements. It serves as an internal consultant and change agent, promoting a culture of learning and excellence.

Note on collaboration: The incumbent will work with faculties to ensure advising practices meet institutional and faculty-specific needs, building trust with academic leaders to support student success.

This is a term position ending March 31, 2026.

Responsibilities
  • Advisor Training & Development (40%): Lead strategy and design of training initiatives, create onboarding and ongoing development programs, collaborate with leadership, and evaluate training effectiveness.
  • Student Resource Development (25%): Develop accessible advising tools, incorporate feedback, ensure inclusivity, and evaluate resource impact on student outcomes.
  • Collaboration & Institutional Support (10%): Engage with colleagues, align initiatives, share resources, and stay informed on advising trends and standards.
Qualifications
  • Master’s degree in education, instructional design, adult learning, or related field
  • Expertise in instructional design and adult learning theory
  • Strong facilitation, presentation, and digital content skills
  • Data analysis and reporting skills
  • Knowledge of advising models and student development theory
  • Commitment to equity, inclusion, and universal design principles
