Purpose of the Position

The conductor position is a foundational role in the railway and operates within the framework of the union agreement. A conductor works as a member of a train crew that assists in switching rail cars, making or splitting up trains in rail yards, or moving rail cars between rail yards. This position requires vigilance about safety and being prepared for unscheduled shift work, extended periods away from home, and working outdoors in all weather conditions.

Position Requirements
  • Ability to perform physically demanding work such as walking up to 10 km daily on uneven ground, climbing, and lifting objects up to 80 pounds.
  • Work unscheduled shifts in a 24/7 environment, including days, nights, weekends, and holidays.
  • Report to work within a two-hour call window after rest periods.
  • Excellent focus, attention to detail, and multitasking abilities.
  • Strong communication skills, including radio instructions.
  • Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions.
  • Pass physical and written assessments, understand safety instructions, operating rules, and regulations in English.
  • Minimum 18 years old with a high school diploma or GED.
  • Valid driver’s license and Canadian passport (entry/re-entry to the U.S. required).
Position Accountabilities
  • Work in train or yard service based on seniority.
  • Follow instructions for train routes and movements.
  • Coordinate switching, coupling, and uncoupling cars.
  • Interpret signals and relay instructions for train movement.
  • Operate signals and relay communications, including emergency protocols.
  • Adhere to operating rules and safety procedures.
  • Handle emergency situations, including fire safety and first aid.

Additional Information
Training

16 weeks of paid training covering safety, rules, and operations. Starting pay is 80% of the job rate during classroom training, increasing to 90% upon completion, with an earning potential of $85,000 in the first year.

Medical Requirements

Pre-employment medical including physical, vision, hearing, drug, and alcohol assessments. Ongoing drug testing during training is required.
