Traffic Field Operations manufactures, installs and maintains all traffic control signs and pavement markings, and provides temporary traffic control and detour set-up for emergencies, construction and special events on City-wide road right of way. Reporting to the Crew Leader of Traffic Field Operations, the Traffic Worker is responsible for the safe and efficient manufacturing, installation and maintenance of permanent and temporary traffic control material, and the general maintenance of facilities and yards.
What will you do?
- Manufacture, install and maintain permanent and temporary traffic control devices and pavement markings
- Measure and pre-mark sites for traffic control installation
- General maintenance of facilities and yards, including cleaning, organizing and performing minor repairs
- Advise Team Leader and Crew Leader on major problems and/or delays that may affect productivity goals
- Communicate and interact with citizens, other employees and internal/external stakeholders
- Read and interpret plans, follow directions, manufacture, install and maintain materials as per plans, instructions and/or manuals
- Operate hand tools, such as drills, wrenches, hammers, power tools etc.
- Handle traffic control material, such as barricades, pipes, signs, paint etc.
- Operate equipment, including but not limited to crosswalk machines, forklifts, trucks, trailers and overhead hoists
- Set up and tear down work sites, and prepare all required vehicles, supplies, materials, equipment, tools, safety/protective equipment and other items required to complete assigned work
- Ensure work is completed safely and responsibly, and in accordance with Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs)
- Actively contribute to a safe work environment
- Perform related work as required
Qualifications- Completion of Grade 10
- 1 year of experience in manufacturing, installation and maintenance of permanent and temporary traffic control material
Assets:
- Completion of Grade 12 or GED
Skills required for success:
- Knowledge of standard methods, materials, tools and equipment used in the construction and maintenance of specific work assignments
- Knowledge of safety precautions and hazards involved in the assigned work
- Ability to perform manual labour for extended periods of time under various weather and environmental conditions
- Ability to use the necessary hand and power tools for work assignments
- Ability to understand and execute verbal and written instructions
- Ability to maintain simple records
- Physically ability and manual dexterity to perform the work of the position
- Ability to communicate effectively with citizens, team, and internal/external stakeholders
- Ability to work independently and as a member of a productive and efficient team

Conditions of Employment:
- Valid Alberta Class 5 driver's licence (or provincial equivalent). Obtaining and maintaining a City Driver's permit is a requirement of this position
- Compliance with the City of Edmonton's Code of Practice for Respiratory Protective Equipment, including medical monitoring is a requirement for this position
- Applicants may be fit tested to wear particulate respirator through scheduled work hours
Work Environment:
- Rotating shifts to provide 24 hour coverage, including evening, night work and weekend work, will be required
