Help keep Edmonton moving! Join our Traffic Operations team as a Traffic Signals Project Engineer and play a vital role in ensuring the safe and efficient flow of traffic throughout our city. As a Traffic Signals Project Engineer, you'll be responsible for the design, engineering, and oversight of construction for traffic signal projects across Edmonton. You'll use your technical expertise to analyze traffic patterns, optimize signal timing, and implement solutions that improve traffic flow and enhance safety for drivers, pedestrians, and cyclists alike. What will you do?
  1. Plan and oversee all aspects of projects, in order to meet the project goals on time and within budget using accepted engineering principles, practices, and design standards
  2. Create scopes of work and operational specifications professional work products associated with individual projects
  3. Develop, prepare and/or review and authenticate engineering plans and designs for traffic signals and intersection controls
  4. Prepare functional specifications and create timing sheet for new traffic signal and traffic control equipment layouts
  5. Help identify and prioritize locations requiring construction improvements
  6. Review traffic engineering studies and design plans for roadway projects relative to the traffic signal systems
  7. Analyze and assist with troubleshooting traffic operational issues by conducting traffic engineering analysis of the transportation system (e.g. traffic signal coordination, detour timing)
  8. Determine methods to improve traffic movement and conduct assessments to improve safety at signalized intersections, including field checks as required
  9. Conduct field surveys and assessments to determine functional requirements for new signals and signal upgrades (e.g. traffic count) which may be required to be scheduled outside of normal business hours
  10. Review and prepare comprehensive responses to the inquiries received from the public, stakeholders, members of Council and the other City staff
  11. Project budgeting, cost and documentation management (conceptual budgets, estimate review, change orders and project close out)
  12. Assist with procurement and contract management
  13. Additional related duties as required
Qualifications:
  1. Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering from a recognized university preferably with coursework in transportation planning, traffic operations, and transit and traffic engineering
  2. Must be a Professional Engineer (P.Eng) in good standing and registered with APEGA. Applicants in a different Canadian jurisdiction eligible for Inter-Provincial Mobility (IPMA) with APEGA may be considered. Registration with APEGA must be obtained prior to employment
  3. Minimum 4 years progressively responsible experience in municipal or related project engineering
  4. Strong project coordination skills including an understanding of project management methods and techniques
  5. Experience working with municipalities.
Skills required for success:
  1. Knowledge and work experience in project management and construction management skills
  2. Working knowledge of relevant codes, legislation, regulations, policies and procedures (OH&S, Environmental, etc.)
  3. Ability to exercise sound engineering judgment and make appropriate technical decisions to address complex engineering issues with broad objectives and/or guidelines
  4. Excellent written and verbal communication skills needed to effectively communicate with a wide range of both technical and non-technical stakeholders
  5. Proven planning, organizational and problem solving skills
  6. Strong conflict resolution and negotiation skills with experience in solving complex and sensitive issues
  7. Demonstrated ability and willingness to develop strong relationships and work in a collaborative, integrated manner

Assets:
  1. Experience or familiarity with transportation related software applications
Conditions of Employment:
  1. Valid Alberta Class 5 driver's licence (or provincial equivalent). Obtaining and maintaining a City Driver's permit is a requirement of this position
  2. This position may be eligible for a hybrid work arrangement with the flexibility to work from both home and the worksite
