Responsibilities

  • Plan, develop, formulate, and review traffic control plans, hazard/risk assessments and clerical tasks.
  • Conduct field traffic management inspections.
  • Plan traffic routing for City services, close roads or detour traffic, coordinate barricades and signs.
  • Analyse traffic data to define operating parameters.
  • Create timelines, instructions and project breakdowns.
  • Coordinate with public, other departments, contractors and developers to minimize disruption.
  • Identify potential issues with traffic control setup and offer resolutions; transport equipment.
  • Provide traffic control in emergencies and inform emergency services and transit companies.
  • Develop traffic control plans with City stakeholders and maintain related databases.
  • Conduct site inspections to ensure contractor compliance; participate in site meetings.
  • Perform minor repairs to traffic control devices and vehicle inspections.
  • Handle clerical duties: maintain databases, prepare reports and budgets.

The City of Victoria is hiring three temporary Traffic Management Coordinators to help keep people moving safely through construction projects, special events, and day-to-day City operations. In this role, you'll develop and review traffic control plans, inspect work sites, coordinate road closures and detours, and work closely with City staff, contractors, emergency services, and the public to minimize disruptions.

This is a great opportunity for someone with traffic control experience who enjoys problem-solving, coordinating multiple stakeholders, and helping keep people moving safely through construction projects and community events. Your work will play a key role in maintaining safe, efficient travel throughout the city while supporting important infrastructure projects and community events.

POSITION FUNCTION

Perform traffic control administration for various construction sites and special events.

KEY DUTIES
  • Plan, develop, formulate, and review traffic control plans, hazard/risk assessments and associated clerical tasks.
  • Conduct field traffic management inspections.
  • Plan traffic routing for all City related services, including construction projects and special events according to specifications, federal regulations and municipal policies; close roads or detour traffic; coordinate placement of barricades, cones and signs and other traffic control devices around job sites; ensure compliance with departmental policy and legislative requirements.
  • Analyse and implement traffic data to define operating parameters.
  • Create timelines, instructions and breakdowns for future projects.
  • Liaise with public, other departments, contractors and the development community to coordinator constructions and road closures to minimize traffic disruption and congestion.
  • Identify potential issues with traffic control set-up and offer resolutions; operate a vehicle to transport equipment and materials.
  • Provide traffic control in emergency situations such as fire, floods, or oil spills on road; inform emergency services, transit companies and local radio stations of road closures.
  • Work with City stakeholders to develop traffic control plans and maintain databases and mapping related to City operations and maintenance.
  • Conduct site inspections to ensure standard traffic control plans and practices are followed by contractors and staff. Attend site meetings to discuss traffic control measures and provide guidance on containment.
  • Minor repairs to traffic control devices such as signs and barriers; Perform pre and post trip vehicle inspections. Provide road closure information to administrative staff.
  • Perform clerical and administrative tasks within the Civic Services Department, including maintaining databases and preparing business correspondence; Prepare priority lists, project status reports and project budgets.
  • Perform related duties where qualified.
INDEPENDENCE
  • Work is generated by construction activities or assigned by supervisor and reviewed upon completion.
  • Issues such as major traffic disruption are discussed with supervisor.

QUALIFICATIONS
Formal Education, Training and Occupational Certification:

High school graduation.

Traffic Control certification. (16 hours)

Experience:

3 years of related experience.

May be requested to substitute in a more senior position.
