Your Opportunity

Our Transportation Planning and Traffic Engineering (TPTE) group provides comprehensive planning, design, and engineering services and we have an immediate opening for a Traffic Engineer to be an integral part of our team.

As a Traffic Engineer, you will have the opportunity to work on a variety of transportation projects. While working as a technical team member, you may provide immediate supervision and guidance to junior employees, assigning tasks, checking work at frequent intervals for accuracy and completeness, and maintaining tasks’ schedule and budget with high-level supervision of an assigned senior staff or the TPTE lead. The ideal candidate will be a problem solver who takes initiative with demonstrated knowledge and experience in engineering and planning projects, understanding of regulatory requirements, excellent communication skills including technical writing and presentation skills, and demonstrated experience with transportation planning, data analysis and modelling. Your work will include a variety of projects including traffic analysis, functional/concept planning & design, and active transportation planning & design. Position will be full-time hybrid employment.

Key Responsibilities
  • Complete Transportation Impact Assessments for a variety of small and large projects
  • Conduct and assist with traffic analysis using various software platforms (Synchro, Arcady, VISSIM, etc.)
  • Functional and conceptual planning for urban and rural roadways
  • Planning and evaluation of complete streets and active modes infrastructure
  • Writing and editing technical reports and engineering studies
  • Collaboration with multidisciplinary teams on major transportation projects
  • Develop and maintain relationships with clients including municipal/provincial agencies and private developers
  • Provides initial quality assurance and quality control for technical products to ensure technical accurateness and regulatory compliance
  • Assists with the preparation of proposals, project reporting and other marketing endeavors.
  • Engage in business development activities to secure new business.
  • Performs other duties of a similar nature and level as assigned
Capabilities
  • Minimum 8 years of experience as a traffic engineering / transportation planner or related jobs working on traffic impact studies, environmental assessment studies or similar tasks.
  • A minimum of two years Canadian experience will be an asset.
  • Self‑motivated individuals with the ability to work in a team environment.
  • Understanding and awareness of traffic analysis methodology and standards
  • Excellent written/verbal communication and strong people skills
  • Experience in managing small projects and tasks
  • Ability to work independently with high‑level direction and supervision provided as needed based on the complexity of the assignment(s).
  • Time‑management skills; understanding of task assignment and schedule, budgeting and efficient use of time and resources.
  • Ability to effectively discuss project issues with clients and reviewing agencies.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.
  • Experienced or familiar with traffic analysis software such as Synchro, SIDRA, HCM, VISSIM, EMME, Aimsun, etc.
  • Knowledge of using GIS and AutoCAD will be an asset.
  • Programming and scripting skills would be a great asset
  • Working knowledge of TAC and Ontario municipal geometric design standards is beneficial
Education and Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in Engineering, Planning, or related fields.
  • Ideal candidate shall have an active P.Eng. or RPP certificate or will be able to obtain it in short time with minimum of 5 years of related experience.
  • Experience in the Ontario and Ottawa market is an asset

Ottawa’s TPTE team uses a hybrid working environment, with a minimum of one day in office expected from all team members. Some travel may be required, such as site visits, delivering plans or documents to reviewing agencies or clients or to attend meetings. May visit study areas, construction sites and/or be exposed to outside elements and inclement weather conditions.
