Job summary

Universal Group in Ottawa is seeking a Traffic Technician to help ensure traffic control at job sites meets regulations and safety standards. You will support crew members and the public by regulating traffic flow and interpreting plans for correct signage placement.

The role requires a valid G license (DZ preferred), availability for day and night shifts, and comfort working in a team. Onboarding includes paid training and a strong emphasis on safety and growth within the company.

Qualifications

  • Must have at least 1 year of experience in construction or traffic control.
  • Must have a valid G Class driver’s license with a clean driver’s abstract.
  • Having a valid DZ driver’s license and a clean driving record is an asset.
  • Must be available for both day and night shifts.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively to give motorists and pedestrians simple directions, explain hazards, and answer questions.
  • Must be able to stay calm under pressure, troubleshoot issues, and collaborate with a diverse group of people.
  • Must be tech savvy with the ability to use a smartphone and enter data using computerized mobile devices.
  • Must be comfortable working in a team environment.
  • Must provide your own CSA Grade 1 (green label) work boots with a minimum 6-inch cuff and electrical shock resistance.

Responsibilities

  • Perform basic traffic control set-ups ensuring that they meet MTO Book 7 requirements to ensure safety of all stakeholders impacted by the site (crew members, motorists, pedestrians, etc.).
  • Protect your peers, construction workers, the motoring public, cyclists, and pedestrians by regulating traffic flow.
  • Interpret traffic management plans to determine correct placement of required signage and channeling devices.
  • Perform multiple traffic control set-ups ensuring that they meet traffic plan requirements and the safety of all stakeholders impacted by the site (crew members, motorists, pedestrians, etc.).
  • Stop traffic whenever required by the progress of work or to keep traffic moving at reduced speeds to avoid tie-ups and delays.
  • Maintain a safety awareness and work in compliance with applicable health and safety regulations and policies.

As a Traffic Technician, you play an important role in ensuring that traffic control management and traffic is completed according to applicable regulations to ensure everybody on or crossing a job site can do so safely.
