Job Description Summary
Utility Steamfitters work under the supervision of the Head Utility Steamfitter. Department Steamfitting assets include 2 Power Generation Plants and the primary District Energy System (DES) across campus. UBC houses two advanced plants: a 45MW Natural Gas Class IV Power Plant and a +15MW Biomass Class II Power Plant.
Duties include system operation, preventative maintenance, repairs, alterations, and reviewing installations of underground DES piping and plant piping works. All work must comply with EN253, ASME B31.1, and Technical Safety BC regulations.
Organizational Status
Reports to the Head & Sub-Head Utility Steamfitter & Mechanical Trades Manager, Engineering and Utilities. Steamfitters work independently and with other tradespeople, both at apprentice and journeyperson levels. Daily work assignments are provided by the Head Utility Steamfitter & Sub-Head Utility Steamfitter.
Work Performed
Performs maintenance, repair, and renovation work on DES outdoor isolation valves, vents, vent-valve-vent assemblies, primary DES strainers, indoor isolation valves, control valves, energy meters, and related instrumentation. Repairs machinery and plant equipment, conducts routine inspections, leak detection, and diagnoses defects, recommending or executing remedial actions.
Assists in analyzing DES system configurations for reconfiguration, isolation, or bypassing. Performs system flushing and quenching as instructed. Conducts inspections of manholes and chambers, including confined space entry following safety procedures.
Works from instructions, blueprints, schematics, and drawings, assembling parts and equipment using soldering, brazing, gluing, screwing, caulking, bolting, and other methods.
Maintains safety standards, uses protective equipment, responds to trouble calls and emergencies, and participates in standby duties, ensuring communication and proximity requirements are met.
Uses appropriate tools and equipment responsibly, practices good housekeeping, and ensures work meets specifications and safety requirements. Keeps current with maintenance technology and adheres to safety policies, working with internal and external crews to ensure safety.
Consequence of Error/Judgement
Work performed within trade standards and regulatory requirements; improper decisions could delay problem resolution, affect system access, or compromise safety.
Supervision Received
Works under the general supervision of the Head and Sub-Head Steamfitter, developing work procedures and solving problems with minimal instructions for unusual issues.
Supervision Given
Monitors and checks the work of apprentices and utility laborers as needed.
Minimum Qualifications

Preferred Qualifications
- Journeyperson trade certification as a Steamfitter and valid BC Driver’s License. A BC Gas Fitter B License with electrical endorsement is advantageous, with salary premiums.
- BC Gas Fitter A License preferred, with at least 5 years related experience. Ability to interpret technical drawings, manuals, and specifications. Effective communication, organization, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work independently and in teams, follow gas line procedures, and develop cooperative relationships. Capable of working various shifts, in confined spaces, and in high-temperature areas. Knowledge of welding and ability to assist welders. Basic proficiency with smartphones, tablets, and PCs. Ability to lift up to 40 lbs in confined environments.
