Job Description Summary:

UBC Building Operations provides comprehensive facilities maintenance, operations and renovation services for lands and buildings owned by the University of British Columbia. Trades are the heart and hands of Building Operations. The Trades units provide a wide range of services for the maintenance, repair and operation of all buildings on campus.

Building Operations Painters perform skilled painting work in surface and paint preparation and the application of paint, stains, vinyl and paper wall coverings, epoxy coatings and other protection and decorative coatings to buildings, fixtures and furniture.

Organizational Status:

Painters report to the Architectural Trades Manager and receive daily instructions and direction from the Head and Sub Head Painter. Painters work both independently as well with associated tradespeople, both at the apprentice and journeyperson level.

Work Performed:

  1. Requests and obtains material and equipment required for the work assigned.
  2. In preparation for painting jobs, matches and mixes paint and stains and performs surface preparation, such as scraping, power washing, sandblasting, minor caulking and plastering.
  3. Utilizing brush, roller and standard and airless spray painting techniques applies paint, stain, vinyl and paper wall coverings, epoxy coatings and other protective and decorative coatings and coverings to the interior and exterior of building structures and fixtures, such as railings, doors, windows, lamp posts, fire hydrants, machinery, signs, curbs, flashings, vehicles, fire escapes and furniture.
  4. Makes estimates and produces inspection reports as required.
  5. Performs emergency call-outs as required.
  6. Ensures that the workplace is safe and follows safe work practices.
  7. Periodically, positions in this classification may be assigned responsibility for providing training, monitoring and checking the work of one or more apprentices or labourers.
  8. Performs minor glass repairs and may be called on to assist glazier.
  9. Communicates with customers as required to ensure the efficient delivery of service.
  10. Carries out any other related duties as required in keeping with the qualifications and requirements of positions in this classification.

Consequence of Error/Judgement:

Determines the sequence of work, the work methods and equipment to be employed and how best to complete the work based on technical knowledge of the trade and related departmental guidelines and policies; inappropriate decisions may result in minor service delays and/or costs.

Supervision Received:

Works under general supervision and from oral and written instructions and according to approved procedures.

Supervision Given:

Monitors and checks the work of apprentice(s) and Labourers as the need arises.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • A trades certification to journeyperson level as a Painter.
  • Valid BC Drivers License.
  • Minimum 5 years of related experience or the equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Willingness to respect diverse perspectives, including perspectives in conflict with one’s own.
  • Demonstrates a commitment to enhancing one’s own awareness, knowledge, and skills related to equity, diversity, and inclusion.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • A working knowledge of relevant industrial safety regulations and building codes.
  • Ability to work from written instructions and specifications and to work independently with minimal supervision. Effective oral and written communication, organizational and problem solving skills.
  • Ability to work both independently and within a team environment.
  • Ability to provide quality service to customers in a courteous, patient manner.
  • Ability to develop and maintain cooperative and productive working relationships.
