Job summary

Colonial Group is seeking a Trade Compliance Specialist / Trade Advisor to provide expert HS classification, free trade agreements, refunds and compliance guidance. You will assist with databases, audits and quality control while supporting staff and clients.

The role requires CCS certification, high school education and at least 5 years of rating experience, with strong attention to detail and communication skills for independent or team work.

Qualifications

Responsibilities

  • Research classification for new products or confirm tariff used for existing items.

  • Provide counselling for verification audits.
  • Guide Compliance Specialist on tariff interpretation, government acts and regulations.
  • Review and enter free trade certificate information; inform clients of rejections.
  • Assist or complete requests for National Customs Rulings.
  • Support Quality Control and participate in client meetings and office duties.

Position Summary

The Trade Compliance Specialist / Trade Advisor provides expert-level HS classification, free trade agreement, refund and amend adjustment and compliance information to clients and staff. The incumbent may also assist with maintain both internal and external databases, performing audits, assisting with Quality Control and a variety of related duties as assigned.

Key Responsibilities (Supervisory/Materials/Information)
  • Research classification for new products and/or confirm tariff used for existing items.
  • Complete, submit and conclude all adjusting entries, including B2’s, DAS, GST, etc. This includes such tasks as researching the database, recovering files, billing, client inquiry, etc.
  • Audit and correct existing databases.
  • Provide counselling for verification audits.
  • Provide guidance and assistance to the Compliance Specialist regarding problem solving, proper method of application and interpretation of tariff; government acts and regulations, etc.
  • Review and enter free trade certificate information; inform clients of any rejected certificates.
  • Assist or complete requests for National Customs Rulings.
  • Other related duties as assigned, including assisting with Quality Control of entries, attending client meetings, general office support, etc.
Education and Experience
  • High school education or related experience.
  • Certified Customs Specialist (CCS) in good standing (must maintain).
  • Minimum of 5 years of rating experience.
  • Note: Consideration will be given to holders of appropriate diplomas or qualifications from other institutions or organizations (e.g. Sir Sandford Fleming or Seneca Colleges, Canada Customs Qualified, etc.).

  • Excellent knowledge of tariff, legal notes, free trade agreements, regulations, valuation, etc.

  • Ability to read, analyze and interpret government regulations
Working Conditions, Mental Effort & Physical Requirements
  • Ability to sit for extended periods of time while entering data
  • Ability to focus on computer screen and / or written materials for extended periods of time
  • Manual dexterity required to use desktop computer and peripherals
  • Must work under deadlines and related stresses in a timely and efficient manner
  • Must be able to professionally handle various personnel and other situations as they arise
  • Concentration is required at all times to perform the job efficiently and accurately, while answering questions or phone calls for inquiries regarding HS classification, valuation or compliance
  • Lifting boxes on occasion – up to 20-25lbs
  • Travel is generally not required, but may need to attend meetings at client offices from time to time
