Track Welder

Job Summary

The Track Welder is responsible for welding and repairing steel and manages track components. Additionally, the incumbent performs other activities, including maintaining tracks.

Major Responsibilities
  1. Use stick electrodes and Flux Cored Arc Welding (FCAW)
  2. Utilize high frequency tools
  3. Weld and grind carbon steel and manganese track components
  4. Inspect track work on completion and approve track
  5. Maintain train operating restrictions in alignment with track standards
  6. Remove and replace defective ties, rail spikes, and anchors
  7. Correct deviations in track surface, alignment, and gauge
  8. Install and repair street and railroad crossings
  9. Assist in replacing and repairing items such as power-operated switches and insulated joints
  10. Unload and assist in unloading ballasts
  11. Unload and distribute track material
  12. Sort used track material for loading, which may be loaded by hand
  13. Clear brush, vegetation, snow, and litter from railroad right-of-way
  14. Establish and maintain drainage
  15. Clean up after work completion
  16. Comply with track safety standards, operating rules, and safe work procedures
  17. Complete work, material inventory, and inspections reports
Working Conditions
  1. Must be available to work shifts, extensive hours, sometimes away from home, and occasional overtime
  2. Must be able to work outside the headquarters location, as needed
  3. Ability to work outdoor in various types of weather conditions with regular exposure to dust, pollen, noise, and vibrations
  4. Ability to use various common and specialized hand tools
  5. Frog and switch welder
  6. Must be able to utilize a respirator for some tasks
  7. Ability to perform repetitive physical activities
  8. Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds (22 kg) and up to 70 pounds (32 kg) occasionally
  9. Must have good eye-hand coordination and grasping
Requirements
  1. Federal and provincial welding qualification or equivalent experience
  2. High School Diploma or equivalent General Education Diploma (GED)
  3. Valid Driver’s License, Class 3 in Quebec or equivalent in other provinces
  4. Collaborates with others and shares information

  7. Experience in similar working conditions*
  8. Knowledge of signals or Rail Operating Rules*
  9. Operator qualifications and experience*
  10. Experience and training in Mechanical*
  11. Post secondary trade education*
  12. *Any experience/education/skills/knowledge for these above would be considered as an asset
Training

The incumbent attends formal and on-the-job training. The role is required to complete the training program successfully. The incumbent receives classroom training over a period of 4 weeks at 40 hours per week. The training is primarily on health and safety rules and basic machine operator procedures. Successful completion of the classroom training and on-the-job training is mandatory to continue employment.

This position is a unionized position. As such, pay and benefits are governed by the applicable collective agreement.
