Description

The heavy equipment operator position involves safely inspecting, repairing, and maintaining railroad track infrastructure to ensure safe and efficient service. This manual labor role requires proficiency in operating heavy equipment such as super trucks, backhoes, skid loaders, dump trucks, brush cutting equipment, tampers, ballast regulators, and forklifts, related to track surfacing and repair. Training will be provided to develop necessary skills.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Operate track-related machinery including tampers, ballast regulators, forklifts, and others as assigned.
  • Troubleshoot and repair equipment as needed.
  • Assist crews in dumping ballast.
  • Inspect, unload, load, distribute, and install track materials and ballast.
  • Inspect, grind, and transpose rails.
  • Construct, maintain, and repair turnouts, crossings, bridges, culverts, tunnels, station facilities, scales, fences, signs, and other infrastructure.
  • Perform vegetation control and debris removal from tracks.
  • Remove snow or foreign materials from track infrastructure.
  • Report accurately and promptly as required.
  • Interpret safety rules, instructions, and regulations.
  • Communicate professionally and effectively.
  • Understand track authority and adhere to performance metrics and deadlines.
  • Follow safety practices and respond to emergencies.
  • Read gauges, schematics, and manuals accurately.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED
  • Must be 18 years or older
  • Valid Driver’s license (minimum G class)
  • CDL Class AZ or DZ
  • Ability to pass required safety and operational training and tests
