Job summary

TG Minto Palmerston is seeking a TPS - Controls Engineering Specialist to support electrical, controls, and vision system work in a high-volume automotive environment. You will assist with wiring, troubleshooting, and documentation while collaborating with TPS engineers and production teams to drive cycle-time improvements and 5S practices.

The role emphasizes hands-on involvement with automation and vision inspection applications, providing real-world solutions in line with Toyota Production

Qualifications

  • Post-secondary education in Electrical Engineering Technician/Technologist, Automation, Mechanical or Industrial Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, or related field.
  • Hands-on experience with PLCs, automation, vision systems, troubleshooting on the shop floor.

Responsibilities

  • Support wiring, assembly, and modification of electrical control panels, including PLC I/O and sensors.
  • Assist with installation, verification, and troubleshooting of electrical wiring on equipment and workstations.
  • Provide basic troubleshooting of electrical and controls issues and escalate complex problems as needed.
  • Support PLC checks, input/output verification, sensor replacement, and basic automation support activities.
  • Create and maintain electrical documentation and control records.

General Job Description:


Reporting to the TPS Supervisor, the TPS - Controls Engineering Specialist will support TPS and manufacturing engineering activities across the Palmerston facility. This full-time role focuses on improving manufacturing processes through practical controls support, vision system support, electrical troubleshooting, workstation improvements, and Toyota Production System (TPS) based continuous improvement activities.


The primary focus of the position is to support electrical, controls, and vision system work, including PLC and relay panel wiring, equipment troubleshooting, camera and sensor support, installation support, and documentation. In parallel, the position will support TPS engineers and production teams with cycle time improvements, workplace organization (5S), waste identification, standard work development, and problem-solving activities.


This position provides hands‑on involvement with real‑world manufacturing systems, automation, vision inspection applications, production support, and daily application of Toyota Production System principles in a high‑volume automotive manufacturing environment.


Duties and Responsibilities:


Controls & Electrical Support



  • Support wiring, assembly, and modification of electrical control panels, including PLC I/O, relays, terminal blocks, power supplies, sensors, and related devices.

  • Assist with installation, verification, and troubleshooting of electrical wiring on equipment, workstations, and production support systems.

  • Perform basic troubleshooting of electrical and controls‑related issues, escalating complex issues as needed.

  • Support PLC‑related checks, input/output verification, sensor replacement, and basic automation support activities.

  • Create and maintain panel labels, wire tags, electrical documentation, and related control records.

  • Maintain panel cleanliness, organization, and compliance with plant safety and electrical standards.

  • Support equipment start‑up, continuous improvement trials, and implementation of approved controls changes.


Vision System Support



  • Support setup, adjustment, troubleshooting, and verification of vision inspection systems used in production processes.

  • Assist with camera, lighting, sensor, lens, bracket, and mounting adjustments to maintain stable inspection performance.

  • Support basic vision system programming, parameter changes, backups, and documentation under approved change control practices.

  • Assist with validation of inspection effectiveness, including part presentation, reject confirmation, false reject review, and process capability support.

  • Work with production, maintenance, quality, and TPS teams to identify opportunities to improve vision inspection reliability and reduce downtime.

  • Maintain vision system documentation, inspection standards, setup sheets, and change records as required.

  • Support continuous improvement activities related to automated inspection reliability, error‑proofing, defect detection, false reject reduction, and process control.


TPS & Manufacturing Support



  • Assist TPS engineers with time studies and operation analysis

  • Support continuous improvement (Kaizen) activities for current production processes

  • Assist with workstation setup, minor modifications, and ergonomic data collection

  • Support material flow observations and data gathering

  • Assist with root cause analysis, problem‑solving activities, and implementation of corrective actions using TPS methodologies.

  • Support 5S initiatives in work areas

  • Support the TPS group with other assigned tasks as required


Qualifications:



  • Post‑secondary education in Electrical Engineering Technician/Technologist, Automation, Mechanical or Industrial Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, or a related field.

  • Practical understanding of electrical circuits, industrial wiring, sensors, relays, and control panel components.

  • Hands‑on experience or demonstrated aptitude in PLC systems, automation, vision systems, troubleshooting, and manufacturing support.

  • Mechanically inclined with strong practical problem‑solving skills and the ability to work safely on the shop floor.

  • Computer skills including Microsoft Excel and Word; AutoCAD experience is considered an asset.

  • Knowledge of PLCs, industrial wiring, electrical drawings, vision inspection systems, camera setup, lighting, sensors, and control standards is considered an asset.

  • Familiarity with TPS principles, continuous improvement, standard work, 5S, and Kaizen is considered an asset.

  • Strong attention to detail with the ability to follow safety procedures, plant standards, and work instructions.

  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team, communicate clearly, and support multiple priorities in a manufacturing environment.
