Job summary

General Job Description

The Mechanical design and assembly supervisor leads the hands-on design, build, and physical implementation of automated equipment and systems within the facility. This role combines mechanical design expertise with direct shop-floor leadership and project management. The successful candidate coordinates day-to-day fabrication, assembly, and installation activities, ensuring projects are completed safely, on schedule, and within budget.

Abilities, Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Supervise the mechanical design process, reviewing and approving all 3D models and drawings created in SOLIDWORKS and AutoCAD for manufacturability and assembly readiness.
  • Oversee and direct the procurement, physical build, and final installation phases of all automated equipment within the facility.
  • Manage and audit the completion of all mechanical inspection documentation for newly commissioned machinery.
  • Plan, justify, and maintain the team's overtime schedule for upcoming projects, ensuring strategic resource allocation prior to management approval.
  • Serve as the primary technical authority, providing advanced troubleshooting advice and guidance to maintenance staff, assembly technicians, and external contractors.
  • Develop and distribute a monthly project schedule to keep all plant departments aligned on upcoming automated equipment rollouts.
  • Direct end-to-end project scheduling, ensuring design, fabrication, and floor-integration milestones are met on time.
  • Continuously improve and update existing engineering procedures, assembly standards, and quality control standard documents.
  • Execute cost analysis, manage the overall automation budget, and approve project expenditures.
  • Devise and implement site-wide control and mechanical strategies to increase overall plant automation and operational efficiency.
  • Negotiate commercial costs with suppliers and contractors, including capital equipment pricing and material sourcing.
  • Enforce strict adherence to plant safety procedures among the team and champion 5S organizational standards across both the design office and assembly floor.
  • Formulate and pitch custom factory automation solutions, return-on-investment models, and capital expense requests to management.
Supervisory Responsibility
  • Execute structured training programs to enhance technical competencies, ensuring team proficiencies align with corporate operational standards.
  • Maintain strict vigilance over workplace environments, proactively identifying hazards and reporting safety infractions to executive management to preserve a zero-incident culture.
  • Manage the daily deployment and task delegation for the Machine Group, balancing individual technical strengths against fluctuating project demands.
  • Convene and chair routine automation group meetings to drive cross-functional brainstorming, concept generation, and deployment strategies for approved capital projects.
  • Execute comprehensive job-costing analyses, tracking capital components, material allocations, and human resource expenditures to maintain strict project margin controls.

Formulate and execute rigorous annualized performance evaluations for all Machine group personnel, establishing key performance indicators and career development pathing.

Qualifications
  • Mechanical engineering diploma/degree. Robotics and Automation diploma or equivalent training and experience.
  • Proven leadership experience (as a supervisor, team leader, or project lead) within an industrial automation or technical manufacturing group is preferred.
  • Ability to communicate with technical professionals & skilled trades at all levels of experience and management.
