Overall Responsibility :

The Tooling Engineer is responsible for the design, development, Tooling and equipment used in the steel blanking process. This role ensures that all tooling meets production, quality, and safety standards while optimizing efficiency and cost. The Tooling Engineer collaborates with cross-functional teams, including production, quality, and maintenance, to improve tooling and equipment performance and troubleshoot issues.

Accountabilities :

  • Design, develop, and implement tooling solutions to support steel blanking operations.
  • Oversee the manufacturing, testing, and validation of new and existing tooling.
  • Assist with setting up tooling for production, Die, Blanking press data entry.
  • Ensuring Blanking Press equipment, levelers, feeders, stacking machine run at rate.
  • Troubleshoot tooling issues to minimize downtime and improve operational efficiency.
  • Conduct root cause analysis and implement corrective actions for tooling-related defects.
  • Work closely with suppliers to source tooling components and ensure quality standards.
  • Monitor tooling wear and plan preventative maintenance strategies to extend tool life.
  • Optimize tooling designs for cost reduction and improved production performance.
  • Ensure tooling meets industry standards and company safety, quality, and environmental requirements.
  • Writes and maintains technical specifications for the procurement of equipment, accurate documentation, including tooling specifications, drawings, and maintenance records.
  • Support continuous improvement initiatives by identifying and implementing best practices.
  • Writes technical specifications for the procurement of equipment and tooling.
  • Lead the design, construction, acceptance testing and installation for equipment and tooling.
  • Participate in the manufacturing of the prototype parts and communicate lessons learned.
  • Program launch support for all new Dies / Part set up for production.

Qualifications :

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Process Engineering, Tool and Die Maker or a related field.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in tooling design, development, and maintenance in a steel blanking or metal stamping environment.
  • Proficiency in CAD software (AutoCAD, SolidWorks, or similar) for tooling design.
  • Strong knowledge of metal forming, die design, and manufacturing processes.
  • Experience with GD&T (Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing) and blueprint reading.
  • Understanding of material properties, heat treatment, and wear-resistant coatings.
  • Knowledge of lean manufacturing and continuous improvement methodologies.
  • Excellent problem-solving and analytical skills.
  • Strong project management skills with the ability to coordinate multiple tasks.
  • Effective communication and teamwork abilities.
  • PLC programming / troubleshooting experience is an asset.
