Job Purpose

Layout, construct, alter and repair a normal variety of tools, dies, fixtures, gauges, machines, and equipment. They create customer success by delivering the best experiences to their internal and external customers.

Key Responsibilities

  • Follow prescribed safety standards, rules and regulations including those regarding the usage of PPE, Emergency Plans and EH&S Policy.
  • To identify unsafe acts and unsafe conditions by completing observation cards.
  • To maintain 5s by removing all tools, equipment, and parts not needed in the work area and for those that are needed to ensure they have a dedicated, labeled home and are in that dedicated home.
  • To monitor for and alert their Team Leader or Supervisor of any abnormalities from the standards in their area. This includes abnormalities in standard processes, standard machine operation, product quality, and logistics management.
  • Completes all CILR activities as required, identifies deficiencies and sources of contamination, including difficult access areas in the workstation, and provides suitable countermeasures to address these issues.
  • Work from blueprints, tables, specifications, and handbook formulas or data to layout and inspect a wide variety of machined, welded, or formed parts, units, components, raw materials, and castings or other materials, parts or supplies as directed in any company area.
  • Recognize and report for correction drawing or blueprint errors that may prevent proper function of tool.
  • Perform difficult and exacting machining operations requiring a wide range of set-ups and methods to maintain close tolerances.
  • Use a wide variety of precision measuring instruments and accessories such as verniers, micrometers, calipers, surface plate, hardness tester, coordinate measuring machine, or other inspection equipment to check parts and items to close tolerances.
  • Skilled bench work involving filing, scraping, lapping, grinding, fitting, finishing, assembly and adjusting to insure proper operation.
  • Measure and analyze parts for conformity and part to part relationship.
  • Set up and make tool tryouts, diagnose, and remedy operations, material, or dimensional problems.
  • Make correct decisions as to fits, finishes, machining, and assembly sequences to produce workable units and maintain close tolerances.
  • Plan inspection procedures and layout work in proper inspection sequence, make all necessary mathematical calculations.
  • Lead and/or assist in analyzing failure for root cause/severity/risk.
  • Demonstrate an understanding with an ability to communicate statistical process control and geometric tolerancing.
  • Assist in the training of other toolmakers and trainees as assigned.
  • Move materials as necessary in the performance of duties.
  • Ensure all products meet the quality guidelines and follow all quality standards, procedures and guidelines in place and be active in improving product quality.
  • To use the defined method of data collection and record keeping for the area so that information can be compiled and used by the company.
  • To contribute to the continuous improvement of safety, quality, and productivity by submitting one (1) Suggestion every two (2) months for a total of six (6) per year.

Experience Required

  • Grade 12 diploma or equivalent.
  • A minimum of three (3) years of machining experience in a manufacturing environment.
  • Able to perform programming of CNC fabrication machines using G code.
  • Able to read and interpret blueprints to convert cartesian coordinates into CNC programs.
  • Able to work with minimal direction.
  • Able to perform light physical effort consisting of occasionally lifting or moving average weight material.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Journeyman machinist and or journeyman toolmaker.
  • A minimum of three (3) years’ experience as a tool and die maker.
  • Experience in various CAD packages to create blueprints for designing tools, dies, fixtures, gauges, machines, and equipment.
  • Experience in MIG welding.
