Job description

Job Summary

Plan and perform all work necessary to design and develop various types of dies (blanking, forming, draw, or progressive) of high complexity for quality production. Determine the appropriate die or tool based on sample parts or drawings, including dimensions and features. Reports to Maintenance Supervision and works according to the 430A Standards and outlined responsibilities.

Responsibilities

  • Design, create, repair, and test prototypes and production tools such as dies, jigs, fixtures, gauges, and specialty tools using various metals, alloys, and plastics.
  • Develop, repair, and modify tools and dies as required.
  • Read and interpret work instructions, blueprints, schematics, and drawings to ensure compliance with standards such as IATF 16949.
  • Perform fitting, grinding, shimming, and adjustments to ensure proper fit and function of parts.
  • Cut, shape, and trim blanks or blocks using power and hand tools.
  • Position and measure metal stock or castings for machining.
  • Collaborate with internal departments for design input and modifications.
  • Operate and maintain machine shop equipment safely and effectively.
  • Create sketches and suggest design modifications for tooling efficiency.
  • Assemble, inspect, and test tools and dies for proper operation and quality.
  • Perform preventive and predictive maintenance on tools and dies.
  • Modify dies and tooling to accommodate engineering changes.
  • Conduct test runs and make necessary adjustments to ensure specifications are met.
  • Maintain a safe, clean work environment and adhere to safety protocols.
  • Identify hazards, use protective equipment, and follow lockout/tagout procedures.
  • Perform welding (oxy-acetylene, plasma cutting, TIG, MIG, arc) and rig heavy loads with cranes.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Skills and Qualifications

  • Completion of Grade 12 or equivalent.
  • Valid 430A Ontario Certificate of Qualification or proof of extensive practical experience (minimum 8,000 or 9,000 hours apprenticeship, or 8 years in the trade).
  • Ability to meet physical demands, including lifting, standing, shift work, and working in various environments.
