Reporting to : Manager PRC Tissue

Worksite : Toronto (currently virtual; subject to change)

Schedule : Combination of weekday and weekend 12-hour shifts

Trillium Gift of Life Network (TGLN), part of Ontario Health, is responsible for the coordination of organ and tissue donation and transplantation in Ontario. Our mandate includes increasing public awareness of the importance of organ and tissue donation, educating healthcare professionals, and ensuring a safe and effective donation and transplant system in Ontario. We are currently seeking a highly motivated temporary full-time Tissue Coordinator (TC). The incumbent will provide professional services related to tissue donation in alignment with TGLN's mission and values. Responsibilities include completing donor screening processes, approaching families for consent, securing tissue acceptance by various tissue banks, coordinating recovery activities, and conducting family follow-up post-donation for consented non-recovered tissues.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Donor screening: assessing clinical suitability and completing medical/social history with family consultation
  • Telephone consent approach: engaging families and securing donation consent
  • Case coordination: offering tissues to banks, providing donor history, negotiating OR time and location, and hospital services
  • Supporting donor families
  • Leading the team when assigned
  • Quality assurance and compliance with occupational health and safety standards
  • Responding to hospital calls, conducting preliminary assessments, and providing expert consultation on tissue donation
  • Providing complete and compliant information to tissue banks
  • Approaching substitute decision makers, reapproaching if necessary, and applying new approach techniques
  • Engaging with onsite hospital personnel for risk assessment, testing, and evaluation
  • Facilitating tissue donation with coroners and obtaining surgical privileges when needed
  • Coordinating recovery timing and confirming facility availability
  • Communicating with families and hospital staff regarding donation status and transport
  • Managing team shifts, case follow-ups, and documentation accuracy

Qualifications for success:

  • University degree or college diploma in health sciences, biological sciences, or equivalent
  • Certification in eye or tissue banking (CEBT/CTBS), blood banking, or healthcare credentials (asset)
  • Minimum three years' experience in organ/tissue donation or healthcare environment
  • Experience working with patients and families in crisis (preferred)
  • Ability to work 12-hour shifts in a 24/7 environment, including weekends and holidays

Knowledge and skills required:

  • Self-motivated, able to work independently and in teams
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Knowledge of biological and health sciences, quality standards (asset)
  • Discretion and sound judgment in maintaining confidentiality
  • Attention to detail and accuracy
  • Strong time management and prioritization skills

Rate of Pay : $34.13 to $42.65 per hour

Employment Type : Temporary full-time (18 months)

Employment Location : Toronto (currently virtual; subject to change)
