About Us

MacEwan University is where caring faculty help people connect their passions to their future paths. Located in the heart of Edmonton’s diverse and dynamic downtown community, and on the traditional lands of Treaty 6 First Nations and homelands of the Métis people, MacEwan is known for exceptional undergraduate learning. With its dedication to teaching excellence, informed by scholarly research, innovation, and creative activity, MacEwan provides an exceptional collaborative and supportive learning environment with a commitment to human rights, environmental sustainability, and opportunities for community engagement. We are committed to creating an equitable, diverse, inclusive, and welcoming community for all peoples, cultures, and identities.

MacEwan University is seeking applications for a Tier 2 Canada Research Chair (CRC) in Sexual and Gender Diversity, commencing July 1, 2025, or as close to that date as mutually agreed, subject to final budgetary approval. This position will support and build on MacEwan University’s Teaching Greatness: Strategic Vision 2030.

You will bring an innovative research program related to sexual and gender diversity, with the ability to attract external funding and to develop community partnerships. You will contribute to high-quality undergraduate teaching and student research supervision, and build upon the strong foundation for research, teaching, and community engagement developed by the previous CRC and Director of the Center for Sexual and Gender Diversity. MacEwan’s Strategic Vision affirms our quest for excellence in undergraduate teaching and learning while appreciating that diverse perspectives are core to high quality scholarship.

As the successful applicant, you will receive a full-time, probationary tenure-track or tenured position at the rank of Associate Professor and must possess the necessary qualifications to be appointed to this level, in the MacEwan Faculty or School best aligned with your research program and teaching background. In this role, you will also be the Director of the Centre for Sexual and Gender Diversity. MacEwan’s Faculties and Schools include the Faculty of Arts and Science, Faculty of Fine Arts and Communications, Faculty of Health and Community Studies, Faculty of Nursing, School of Business, and School of Continuing Education. A commitment to cross-disciplinary scholarship is considered an asset.

You will teach courses in your area of expertise, housed in one of MacEwan’s Faculties or Schools, as described above, at a reduced teaching load while holding a CRC. Contribution to university service will also be incorporated in the workload.

As the successful applicant, you will have:

  • a PhD in a relevant discipline (for example: Health Sciences, Public Health, Sociology, Social Work, Gender Studies, Anthropology);
  • an active program of original, innovative, and productive research related to gender and sexual diversity;
  • experience teaching in a post-secondary institution, and a demonstrated commitment to undergraduate teaching; and,
  • the ability to involve undergraduate students in research activities.

CRC Eligibility Criteria

A Tier-2 CRC has a term of five years which may be renewed once for a second five-year term. Tier 2 Chairs are intended for exceptional emerging scholars (i.e., candidates must have been an active researcher in their field for fewer than 10 years at the time of nomination). Applicants who are more than 10 years from having earned their highest degree (and where career breaks exist, such as maternity, parental, or extended sick leave, clinical training, etc.) may have their eligibility for a Tier 2 Chair assessed through the program’s Tier 2 justification process.

How to Apply

You should submit a cover letter, curriculum vitae, statement of research interests, and teaching dossier (including your teaching philosophy and recent teaching evaluations). The cover letter should indicate with which of MacEwan’s Faculties or Schools your teaching and research interests would best align.

This position is included under the Faculty Association collective agreement.

All qualified candidates are encouraged to apply; however, Canadians and permanent residents will be given priority.

MacEwan University is committed to fostering the principles of equity, diversity, and inclusion within our community. We welcome and encourage applications from Indigenous peoples, racialized persons, visible minorities, women, persons with disabilities, sexual and gender minorities, and members of all equity-deserving groups. We believe that the diversity of our students, staff, and faculty serves as a strength of our institution and benefit to society.
