Position Purpose summary:
The Thrift Store Clerk provides excellent customer service to customers, sorts incoming products, receives donations and assists the Store Manager with the maintenance of store operations. Working with other Store Clerks, remove and replenish inventory on the sales floor, perform sales transactions and maintain store appearance to maximize sales and profitability.
Accountabilities
Sorting
Receive donations and bring drop-offs into warehouse area, storing donations to ensure safety standards are maintained
Sort incoming donations, separating merchandise for the sales floor and items for baling and garbage.
Pack seasonal items for storage.
Bag cotton, dog blankets and towels
Stock Preparation
Size and hang clothing to be sold on hangers
Attach price tags to the items to be sold
Price items for sale in accordance with established pricing ranges
Put stock to be sold on appropriate racks and shelves in the store in accordance with store policy.
Replenish inventory levels as required, meeting required quotas.
Clean, display and arrange merchandise as assigned ensuring presentations are well-maintained.
Complete sales transactions and take payment (cash, debit, credit card) as per operating and established procedures and The Salvation Army policies.
Complete sales exchanges as per The Salvation Army policy.
Process Family Services and community vouchers
Customer Service
Answer phone and respond to or direct callers as appropriate
Provide Customer Service that reflects The Salvation Army’s mission statement and core values.
Open and close the store as directed by the MHTS Manager.
Maintain customer relations by giving prompt, courteous assistance to customers.
Store Maintenance
Keep work area and sales floor clean, safe and attractive according to established schedule including: vacuuming, sweeping, mopping, dust, disinfecting, etc.
Clean bathroom as scheduled including, floors, toilet, sinks, walls, etc.
Clean outside of store as assigned including snow shoveling
Ensure work areas are stocked with supplies.
Take out garbage to BFI bin and break down cardboard boxes for recycling
Bail stock as it is rotated out of sales stock.
Complete all other cleaning duties as assigned.
Perform other position related duties as required.
Working Conditions:
This is a full-time position at 37.5 hours per week.
Schedule may vary from week to week and includes typical retail hours and Saturday’s
Flexibility in scheduling is required.
The Supervisor will set the hours of work and work schedule.
Includes a ½ hour unpaid meal-break where applicable
Environment is typically in a store and warehouse
Exposure to garbage, washrooms, odors, dirty environment, truck fumes, vehicles and temperature changes
Ability to stand for long periods with frequent twisting, bending, crouching and reaching is required.
Ability to lift/move up to 30 pounds
Education and Experience Qualifications:
Education, Qualifications and Certifications:
Completion of High School.
Alternative combinations of education and experience may be considered.
Experience and Skilled Knowledge Requirements:
Have a minimum of one (1) year of prior related experience.
Cash handling experience is required.
Demonstrated sales ability and product/brand awareness knowledge an asset
Knowledge and experience using a cash register, debit machine and/or credit card processing is a definite asset.
Skills and Capabilities:
Maintain information in confidence as required
Participate as an active and responsible team member.
Participate in mandatory orientation training.
Participate in regular supervision and performance appraisal process.
Represent the organization in a professional and engaging manner.
Must comply with all Salvation Army policies and procedures and associated legislation.
Exhibit good listening skills, have strong oral/written communication skills and respect authority
Self-motivated/disciplined.
Work in compliance with OH&S Act and Regulations and abide by The Salvation Army’s health and safety policies and procedures.
Excellent interpersonal skills, integrity, and adaptability.
Strong oral and written communication skills.
Provide an original copy of a Background Check that is satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion, is required. The screening is secured either through the national Canadian Police Information Centre (CPIC) or through a local police detachment
May require screening through The Salvation Army Abuse Registry.

Compensation:
