Job Description Summary

Energy and Water Services Millwrights install, maintain, inspect, and repair UBC Utilities machinery and equipment, including pumps, material handling systems, fans, hydraulic systems, and mechanical power transmission systems used in utility distribution.

The role involves rigging, pump and mechanical system repairs, and performing skilled work to ensure equipment functionality, minimize downtime, and maintain safety and efficiency across UBC's jurisdiction.

Organizational Status

Works under the supervision of the People and Process Manager Plant, the Assistant Chief Engineer, and the People and Process Manager Utilities Trades.

Work Performed
  • Fabricate and install new machinery and equipment
  • Operate machine shop tools for fabrication
  • Perform inspections and preventative maintenance
  • Diagnose and repair equipment failures
  • Undertake equipment testing and commissioning
  • Respond to emergency calls and assess situations
  • Rebuild compressors, pumps, and hydraulic/pneumatic systems
  • Welding, brazing, soldering
  • Coordinate rigging and lifting
  • Read schematics and manuals for installation and repair
  • Maintain plant equipment and plan shutdowns
  • Prepare reports and use digital devices and software
  • Communicate effectively via email and other electronic means
  • Follow safety procedures and regulations
  • Use precision alignment tools
  • Participate in confined space entry and operate specialized vehicles
  • Maintain a safe work environment
Consequence of Error/Judgement

Failure to follow procedures could seriously affect mechanical systems; quick, accurate assessments are essential to minimize damage.

Supervised by the People and Process Manager, Plant Chief Operating Engineer, and other managers.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Red Seal or BCTQ Industrial Mechanic (Millwright) Certification
  • 3-5 years industrial experience
  • Valid B.C. Class 5 driver’s license
  • Welding competency
  • Knowledge of hydraulic and pneumatic systems
  • Experience with power and hand tools
  • Troubleshooting skills
  • Teamwork and time management skills
  • Machining experience is an asset
  • Desirable: 4th Class Power Engineer Certificate
