Job summary

The Government of Nova Scotia is seeking a Tradesperson Apprentice – Mechanic for their Middleton Bus Garage. This term position, lasting from July 2, 2025, to July 30, 2026, involves performing maintenance and repairs on school buses, including diesel engines and braking systems. Applicants should possess a Motor Vehicle Repair Apprenticeship License and strong interpersonal skills. Preference will be given to qualified applicants from the CUPE Bargaining Unit Local 3876.

Qualifications

Responsibilities

Job description

Tradesperson Apprentice – Mechanic

Middleton Bus Garage

Term position effective July 2, 2025-July 30, 2026

Rate of Pay: As per CUPE Collective Agreement
Closing Date for Applications: Midnight, June 20, 2025

Terms and conditions of employment, including wages, are in accordance withthe Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) Collective Agreement Local 3876.

Reporting to the Transportation Supervisor, the Mechanic will be responsible for completing major bus maintenance checks and repairs to diesel engines, transmissions, drive trains, suspension systems, brakes, exhaust systems, electrical and auxiliary equipment, etc.

Responsibilities will include:

  • Responsibility for identifying repair and or replacement needs
  • Performing repairs and preventive maintenance within the Laws of the Province of Nova Scotia
  • Experience in repairs and operations of school buses including, but not limited to, repair of diesel engines, airbrakes, power train, transmissions, fuel systems, cooling systems, steering electrical, suspension systems, welding tasks, as well as preventative maintenance tasks including oil changes and grease jobs
  • Experience with engine, transmission, brakes and diagnostic computer software required
  • Broad knowledge of safety procedures and practices required
  • Ensuring completion of projects in accordance with trade standards
  • Keep a clean safe work area

The successful candidate will be team-oriented and positive, and should have the following abilities and qualifications:

  • Strong interpersonal skills including conflict resolution
  • Strong written and oral communication skills
  • Motor Vehicle Repair (Truck and Transport) Apprenticeship License required
  • A Class 2B license with air brake endorsement required
  • Three years’ experience in trade preferred

Qualified applicants from within the CUPE Bargaining Unit Local 3876 will be considered first. Should there be no qualified candidate from within the Bargaining Unit, new applicants will be considered.
