Compensation Range

$6,747.50 - $9,701.42 CAD Monthly

The Compensation Range is the span between the minimum and maximum base salary for a position. The midpoint of the range is approximately halfway between the minimum and the maximum and represents an employee that possesses full job knowledge, qualifications and experience for the position. In the normal course, employees will be hired, transferred or promoted between the minimum and midpoint of the salary range for a job.

Job Profile

AAPS Salaried - Nursing, Level B

This position will be a 0.33 FTE for the duration of the semester.

UBC Okanagan’s School of Nursing is seeking up to seven term clinical assistants to support NRSG_O 236: Nursing Practice II at Kelowna General Hospital or NRSG_O 239: Nursing Practice in Mental Health at Kelowna General Hospital or Vernon Jubilee Hospital.

Clinical practice days are one day per week (Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday or Friday) and daily practice hours are typically 0630-1530 (some afternoons/evenings may be scheduled).

The NRSG_O 236 practicum supports students to develop beginning knowledge, skills, and abilities to provide safe ethical nursing care for adults with episodic and chronic health challenges. Instructors support students in clinical rotation on an acute medical or surgical unit.

The NRSG_O 239 practicum in mental health provides opportunities to acquire knowledge, skills, and attitudes to promote wellness, through safe, ethical nursing care, in a variety of contexts. The focus will be presenting a mental well-being project to a specific target population. Other experiences will provide students an understanding of the mental health nursing process. This practicum will include inpatient mental health, simulation, and community practice experience supervision.

Working Relationships:

  • Works within a team of others who are teaching at the same level in the program.
  • Participates in review labs.
  • Initiates and maintains contact where assigned and orients self to the setting as per Interior. Health Policy and the School of Nursing expectation.
  • Collaborate as necessary with the agency personnel to ensure that the student experience addresses the goals.

  • Consults with Team Leader and Assistant Director when student performance is of concern.

Work Performed:

  • Attend orientation workshops.
  • Attend planning meetings prior to the start of the contract/term.
  • Attend team meetings as scheduled and participate in minute taking on a rotational basis.
  • Attend Term End Review Meeting.
  • Become familiar with the School of Nursing Policies.
  • Schedule specific practice learning experiences for assigned students.
  • Prepare patient assignments and inform students of their assignments according to the course expectations.
  • Be present during the entire student practice time and supervise students throughout their time at the agency.
  • Maintain a daily anecdotal record of each student’s performance and provide feedback as outlined in Practice Policies.
  • Engage in student journal dialogue.
  • Grade and provide feedback on practice-related written assignments.
  • Complete the student evaluation process at the end of term.
  • Participate in labs and simulation during the practice term.
  • Provide written feedback to the team regarding the practice environment at the end of the term.
  • Provide mentoring to new practice teachers at the beginning of the term.
  • Attend grade appeals even if these appeals take place following contract completion.
  • Regularly check UBC Okanagan School of Nursing e-mails (at least three times weekly).
  • Submit mileage and parking reimbursement claims on a monthly basis.
  • Invited to attend School of Nursing monthly meeting, but not required.

Exercising Judgment/Impacts of Decisions/Consequence of Error:

Offer formative as well as summative evaluative feedback verbally, through the written journal, and in the form of written evaluation. Seek guidance regarding student performance concerns only from the Team Leader or the Assistant Director and collaborate with them to provide the student with constructive feedback and options for progress in the program.

Be willing to give negative feedback to the student if indicated. Inappropriate judgment or unwillingness to provide constructive feedback may harm the student’s progress in the program and/or result in unsafe practice in subsequent practice placements.

Supervision Received and Given:

Initially, mentorship will be provided by an experienced faculty member. The Team Leader is available for consultation at any time. The Associate Director is also available for consultation regarding policy and its application as well as regarding student performance and the provision of feedback.

It is expected that experienced clinical assistants will provide mentoring to new practice teachers as appropriate.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Clinical Assistant: Undergraduate degree in Nursing and Registered Nurse or Registered Psychiatric Nurse with British Columbia College of Nurses and Midwives, plus at least two years of experience in a clinical position.
  • Willingness to respect diverse perspectives, including perspectives in conflict with one’s own
  • Demonstrates a commitment to enhancing one’s own awareness, knowledge, and skills related to equity, diversity, and inclusion

Preferred Qualifications

Clinical experience in acute care medicine or mental health nursing. Previous teaching or student supervision experience is an asset.
