Job Description:

POSITION PURPOSE SUMMARY:

The Summer Youth Basketball Coordinator will organize and facilitate local opportunities for teens to develop their basketball skills over the summer. They will also coordinate activities to promote healthy peer-to-peer and peer-to-adult relationships. The successful incumbent will oversee the promotion of the program and communication with the families of the participants. The incumbent will work out of our church location at 1480 Sutherland Avenue, Kelowna, B.C., and will include a spiritual formation component to the program.

BASIC FUNCTIONS/RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Organize and facilitate basketball skills sessions for teens
  • Network with local schools and agencies to promote the summer youth program
  • Plan and supervise field trips and special events for the teen groups (e.g., beach days)
  • Plan transportation for teens to field trips and special events
  • Set up and clean up for youth programs
  • Promote summer camp opportunities
  • Help families register for camp
  • Arrange transportation to drop-in activities
  • Connect with parents of youth with relevant information regarding activities
  • Shop and prepare food for youth programs
  • Reconcile expenses for youth programming
  • Offer some administrative support to the church office staff
  • Other duties as assigned

CRITICAL RELATIONSHIP MANAGEMENT

Governance Boards and Councils: None

Internal:

  • Ministry Unit management, Officer
  • Divisional Headquarters - Area Commander, DHQ Youth Department, Regional Youth Coordinator
  • Territorial Headquarters – Territorial Youth Department, Territorial Abuse Advisor

External:

  • Okanagan Central Youth Pastor’s networks, Child Protection Agencies (as needed)

MANAGERIAL RESPONSIBILITY:

  • Reports directly to the Corps Officer.
  • Direct reports: None.
  • Workflow coordinator. May supervise volunteers serving with youth.

FINANCIAL AND MATERIAL MANAGEMENT:

  • Monitors spending for the programs overseen.
  • Responsible for minor financial matters and resource use.
  • May handle small amounts of cash.
  • Minimal material responsibility.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Serves in a church office environment. Conditions may include:
    • People with challenging behavior
    • Verbal abuse
    • Minor risk of harm, injury, or illness
  • Intervenes if participants’ behavior changes.
  • The job involves planning and research, often on a computer.
  • The above responsibilities must align with The Salvation Army’s Mission, Vision, and Values, maintaining professionalism and uphold our code of conduct.

    EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE QUALIFICATIONS:

    Education, Qualifications, and Certifications:

    • Non-Violent Crisis Intervention Training is an asset.
    • Child Abuse Prevention training modules to be completed during probation.
    • Alternative education and experience considered.

    Experience and Skilled Knowledge Requirements

    • Minimum of three years related experience.
    • Ability to provide satisfactory Criminal Background and Vulnerable Sector Checks.

    Compensation:

    The target salary range is $21.83 to $27.29, with a maximum of $32.75. Salary placement depends on market conditions, internal equity, and candidate qualifications.
